Rachel Vaughan, 2010 Graduate
Scrapbooks, Hollins Abroad London, 2008
“The two scrapbooks contain some of my favorite pictures taken while abroad, as well as all the flyers and tickets I collected. It is a beautiful overview of my time there. I always think about the day I arrived off the plane, so exhausted and excited when I first open the scrapbook. I remember how beautiful London was and how I felt more at home there than in Virginia.” (Vaughan)
This is one of two scrapbooks that contain photos and mementos from student Rachel Vaughan’s 2008 semester abroad in London, including tube maps, oyster cards, international student IDs, examples of currency (both pounds and euros), and many, many bus and train tickets to the surrounding areas. The pages on view show photos of the Globe Theatre along with tickets from a few shows Vaughan saw while abroad. These include The Merry Wives of Windsor at Shakespeare’s Globe and Hamlet from the Royal Shakespeare Company, starring Scottish star David Tennant (most well known as the 10th Doctor in BBC’s Doctor Who!) This production is known for its use of the real human skull of classical composer Andre Tchaikovsky.
