Photograph of the 1970 Summer Tour group
In this photograph, the 1970 Hollins Abroad Summer Tour group stands with their bus in front of the American Farm School in Thessaloniki, Greece. The students stayed at the school for three days in July 1970. During her stay, Skarlatos and four other students worked in the school’s dairy farm, washing windows and eating ice cream. On their second day, they visited the local village of Galatista, where they performed Greek dances in the street, arranged by their tour guide George Guisi. On their final day, the students observed a road construction project that American students living at the Farm School were building. The bus in the photograph was the one constant during the students’ busy summer, carrying them throughout Europe from July 22nd - August 8th.

Itinerary of 1970 Summer Tour
This itinerary outlines the schedule of the trip taken by the 1970 Hollins Abroad Summer Tour group. A typical day on the tour would start with breakfast at the hotel, followed by a drive and sightseeing. Lunch would follow, with students buying provisions of cold cuts, cheese, bread, and fruit, which the students would enjoy at a picnic. In between recreation, the students would hear lectures from Professor Henning Nouneberg, and were often assigned topics which they would have to research and share with each other. They would also have occasional free time, one instance of which Skarlatos visited an anti-religion museum in Moscow that was not a part of their tour of the city.
