One of the first changes to be implemented is the elimination of condition codes for video edits. This means candidates are now permitted to submit edited videos, with the understanding that if edits interfere with an assessor’s ability to accurately score the submission, the assessment may be returned to the candidate or scored at a level 1.
Commission staff would like to offer some clarifications regarding video edits:
The expectation is that video edits will be made only to ensure all components of a lesson are included within the time limit.
Edits should be minimal
Edits should not distract from the lesson (e.g., background effects or added titles that distract from the assessor's ability to view the required evidence should not be added)
Edits must not interfere with the meaning, viewing, or sound quality of the video clip.
The following types of edits may not result in a condition code; however, they are strongly discouraged.
Adding flashy titles, animations, or special effects
Inserting background music or sound effects
Using scrolling text, added commentary, or artificial transitions
This change is effective for any edTPA submitted on or after May 1, 2025.
As a CSUN teacher credential candidate you must confidentially video-record lessons and collect anonymous student work for supervision, reflection, and assessment purposes (edTPA), with materials viewed only by educators, and must request completion of the attached Video Release Form. If parent/guardians do not want their child recorded, they should be placed out of view of the camera.
Science -Provide 2 video clips (each no more than 10 minutes in length) that demonstrate how you interact with students in a positive learning environment to develop their understanding of how to use evidence and/or data and science concepts to construct and evaluate explanations of or predictions about a real-world phenomenon. (For FRED (554), you need one 10 minute video and an optional one 5 minute video illustrating students academic language usage)
First video - The first clip should illustrate how you actively engaged students in organizing and analyzing evidence and/or data from a scientific inquiry. Students should be examining the evidence and/or data to look for patterns, identify outliers, and/or explore contradictory findings.
Second video - The second clip should illustrate how you facilitated your students' use of scientific evidence and/or data AND concepts to construct and evaluate evidence-based explanations of a phenomenon or predictions of reasonable outcomes based on patterns in evidence and/or data.
Health -You should choose lessons that show you interacting with students as they show active engagement in using functional health knowledge, demonstrating health-related skills, and/or developing personal beliefs and analyzing group norms to help them adopt and maintain healthy behaviors. (For FRED (554), you need one 10 minute video and one 5 minute video illustrating students academic language usage)
To insure that your video files are not too large to upload to GoReact or the EdTPA submission site, record them at lower resolution. For the iPhone, go to Settings / Camera / Record Video, and select the lowest resolution. The lowest resolution on an iPhone 12 is 720p at 30 frames per second. The lowest for an iPhone 11 is 360p at 30 frames per second. Look at the screen capture below and note how much space you save by recording at lower resolutions.
Audio - It is very important that evaluators be able to hear everything that the student teacher says. The inverse square law determines how loud a sound will be recorded. The intensity of a sound decreases as the inverse square of the distance from the camera (see figures). If the video recording device is in the back of the classroom, the microphone will magnify local sounds (student coughs, squeaking desks, etc.) and will minimize the sound of the teacher. In order to hear the teacher clearly, we suggest using a bluetooth microphone.
If you use a bluetooth microphone, it may be difficult to hear student comments. To make sure that student comments can be heard on the recording, the student teacher should either point the lavalier bluetooth microphone towards the speaker, and/or repeat and summarize what the student has said.
Create a GoReact account.
Use the GoReact cell phone app to upload your video to the appropriate folder.
Compress your video if necessary, but make sure you are able to read any diagrams or text.
Make sure you have a strong WiFi Signal before uploading videos.
Using the GoReact App, you can upload your videos directly to the GoReact cloud so you don't run out of memory on your phone
