Since prayer is our lifeline to God, we are called not just to pray occasionally, but to develop a consistent and life-giving prayer time. Through this daily encounter with God, we are guided and empowered to live out our calling as followers of Christ. Through prayer, we are consoled in our afflictions, encouraged in the face of challenges, emboldened for the difficult task at hand, and guided in the way we are to go. Through prayer, our transformation in Christ continues, as we attain to the holiness of God. Prayer is amazing in that it connects weak human flesh to the Almighty and Omnipotent God. But what is even more amazing is the posture of God Himself. Hear what God said through the prophet Jeremiah, after talking about His plan for His people to have a future full of hope: 

“When you call me, when you go to pray to me, I will listen to you. When you look for me, you will find me. Yes, when you seek me with all your heart, you will find me with you, says the Lord, and I will change your lot” Jer 29:12-14a

Now that is an amazing revelation and promise. When we pray, God listens! Why should God listen to puny, sinful humans like us? Why would He even waste His time? What can we give or offer God that will enhance His situation? Nothing, nothing at all. But when we go to pray, God assures us He will listen. When we seek God, we will find Him. We can seek God in many ways: in the Bible, in the wonders of creation, in the beauty of nature, in the testimonies of believers, in the preaching of the Word, in the lives of saints, in quiet adoration before the Blessed Sacrament, and in the face of the poor. But the primary means by which we seek and find God is through prayer. Even when we look to the other ways, it is only by synthesizing these with prayer that we will discover God in and through them. 

Imagine prayer, our lifeline to God, as a phone call to Him. It is a direct line to God. There will be no busy signals, no wrong numbers, no missed calls, no being put on hold, and no discourteous or disinterested angel-operator. When we call, God answers! Further, when we are fervent in our prayers, coming from the heart, God will hear, answer, and change our sorry lot. God delights in answering our prayers. If our prayer truly reflects an intimate relationship with God, then He is with us, He is one with us. He is merciful, compassionate, and full of empathy. He is a Father who loves His children. 

Of course, when we pray, we should not only ask our Father for what we want. Rather, we should find out what He wants for us. Father knows best, after all. And God loves us even more than we are able to love ourselves. He responds.
