“Our Christian life is a walk with God. It is a life of growing intimacy with our Creator. It is a pilgrimage to the heavenly Jerusalem, where our hope is to live eternally with God our Father.” – Frank Padilla, Focused on Christ
In this earthly pilgrimage, our guide and companion is the Lord Jesus Christ. In his great love for us, he not only became man and suffered and died for us, thereby winning for us our salvation, but he continues to move us on, ensuring that we will indeed enjoy the fruit of his great sacrifice. Jesus does not just tell us, “I’ve paved the way for you. There’s the road to heaven. Get going.” Rather he says to us, “There’s the road to heaven. Let’s go.”
Jesus invites us to walk with him. This is a tremendous privilege and opportunity for us, and it is important for us to realize what this means.
Jesus as Companion
Guide: He shows the way to the Father (Jn 14:6) and illuminates our path in dark times (Jn 8:12). We can always turn to Him. He clearly shows us the path and so we need not hesitate nor stumble. But if we do, we can always turn to him, knowing that he will patiently and lovingly take us by the hand and lead us on.
Teacher: Jesus is there to teach and enlighten us. The road to the Father is a new and often strange one for us. It is Jesus who is able to teach us about the ways of God, and enables us to recognize and avoid the ways that are not of God. He keeps us on the right track, avoiding the many side roads that branch off from the straight and narrow path.
Supporter & Encourager: Jesus is there to support and encourage us. He gently moves us on. He exhorts us, chastises us, tells us we can do it. He is able to laugh and cry with us (Rom 12:15). He is able to relate with us during our highs and during our lows. With Jesus by our side, we have a continuous opportunity to speak to him, to listen to him, to ask things of him, to draw wisdom from him, to simply bask in his life-giving presence.
Sustainer: Jesus is there to sustain us. The authentic Christian life is not an easy one. It is a life of hardship and persecution (Mk 10:30; 2 Cor 12:10). But we have a companion who has been through it all. He has experienced extreme pain, persecution, hunger, grief, insult, humiliation, fear, injustice, temptation, denial and betrayal by friends. Whatever difficulty we are facing in life, Jesus can empathize with us. He is the source of our strength. He is the co-bearer of our yoke (Mt 11:28-30).
Our Response
Rejoice & Thank God: Celebrate Jesus as our guide, protector, teacher, and friend (Mt 10:30).
Be Open & Humble: Recognize our need for His wisdom, grace, and strength.
Be People of Prayer: Cultivate intimacy with Jesus, know His voice, and allow Him to form us in His image.
Just as Christ transformed the sorrow of the Cross into the glory of Resurrection, He invites us to let our daily struggles lead us closer to His light. Walking with Him turns our trials into triumphs, our burdens into blessings, and our sorrow into glory.
