Grace
“Be very careful, then, how you live not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” Eph 5:15-16
In our busy world, it's easy to get caught up in the demands of work, technology, and other distractions. Yet, as Catholics, we are reminded that time spent together as a family is one of the greatest gifts we can give one another. In Ephesians 5:15-16, St. Paul encourages us, “Be very careful, then, how you live not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.”
This verse reminds us that our time is precious, and we are called to use it wisely—especially with our loved ones. Hope is nurtured in the moments we share together, whether through prayer, conversation, or simply being present. Families that make time for each other create a foundation of love, trust, and faith, allowing hope to grow in the hearts of every member.
However, in today’s digital age, mindless browsing and excessive screen time can take a significant toll on family relationships. While technology has many benefits, when overused or misused, it can isolate family members, hinder meaningful communication, and create emotional distance. Constant scrolling or screen time during family meals or gatherings can interrupt moments of connection, making it difficult to engage in meaningful conversations or bond as a family.
The negative effects of too much screen time can include decreased attention span, reduced emotional intelligence, and feelings of loneliness or neglect, even when we are physically present with others. The distractions of screens can also interfere with the time spent cultivating faith and prayer within the family, depriving everyone of the peace and unity that comes from shared spiritual practices.
As part MFC Covenant, we are called to dedicate ourselves to building strong families for Christ. By dedicating quality time to our families, we build lasting bonds and show the world that love and faith are worth prioritizing. In these moments, we plant seeds of hope that will bear fruit for generations to come. Hope abounds in family time. Let us commit to spending quality time with our families and avoid the pitfalls of mindless screen time. For it is in these moments, away from the distractions, that God’s grace works most powerfully in our lives and within the hearts of our Christian Home.
“What is the difference between an ordinary house and a Christian Home? It is the difference between a structure merely built by human, a place built by the Lord and where he himself makes his residence. It is a difference between a boarding house, where the occupants merely eat and sleep, and place where loving and intimate relationships are fostered and nurtured.” – Frank Padilla, Families in the Holy Spirit
