My name is Maria Lopez. I am a transitions counselor for San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) and the California Adult Education Program; I am also the Noncredit Coordinator for San Bernardino Valley College. My key role as a counselor is to transition students from our local Adult Schools to Valley College. I assist students through the matriculation process and help them overcome barriers as they transition to SBVC. As the noncredit coordinator, my key role is to assist departments within the college to create and offer noncredit courses that prepare students for credit-bearing courses or noncredit certificates that will help students with employability. I am passionate about helping our adult education students to achieve their educational goals so that they can provide a better quality of life for themselves and their families. I believe that family is one of my greatest values in life, and education is one of the primary ways to enhance one’s quality of life.
My name is Pete Gonzalez, I am a transitions counselor and professor at San Bernardino Valley College. My role as a transition counselor with the California Adult Education Program is to assist students in their transition from adult school to post-secondary education. Our students face numerous challenges in their educational journey, and I have taken on the responsibility of advocating for our students and guiding them in their education pursuits. As a professor teaching student development courses, I have taken on the task of preparing students for higher education by teaching them skills and traits that will prepare them for college and beyond. As an adult learner and nontraditional student that started their higher education pathway later in life, I know firsthand the challenges faced by our adult learners and work diligently to break down those barriers. My dedication to higher education and to the adult education population comes from the understanding that education has the ability to create positive life changing opportunities for them and their families.
