This year, we are commissioned to the missio ad gentes. How provident that as we rejoice for the gift of five hundred years of Christianity in our county, we also celebrate 40 years of community life in MFC and 10 years of the work of LCSC. How do all of these milestones make you feel?

Grace

Read:

Isaiah 9:1-6
Psalm 97:1-6
Ephesians 1:3-18
Mark 10:13-16

We live today in a world that is in the darkness of sin and evil. But Jesus, the light of the world, has already come. “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who lived in a land of gloom a light has shone.” (Is 9:1). The war between darkness and light continues to rage. The people of God need to engage and bring Jesus’ light to the world and be instruments of his salvation. To the ends of the earth.

The gospel is for all. Being the good news that it is, it brings great joy to all. “You have brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at harvest” (Is 9:2). As Jesus establishes his kingship in people’ hearts, then the world can truly rejoice. “The Lord is king; let the earth rejoice; let the many islands be glad.” (Ps 97:1).

How can all this happen? We need to proclaim Christ. We are those “who have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation” (Eph 1:13a). As we heard, we put our faith in Jesus, and as those who “have believed in him, were sealed with the promised holy Spirit” (Eph 1:13b). Thus we have been saved and sanctified, and then are sent in accordance with His plan. “In him we were also chosen, destined in accord with the purpose of the One who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will” (Eph 1:11).

What is God’s plan? It is “a plan for the fullness of times, to sum up all things in Christ, in heaven and on earth.” (Eph 1:10). If all things are to be brought to and under Christ, if his dominion is to be over the whole earth, if Jesus is “the Lord of all the earth” (Ps 97:5b), then our work needs to be worldwide, to the very ends of the earth, so that “all peoples see his glory.” (Ps 97:6b).

Such is our mission in MFC. But we are also “families” with the all-important work of family renewal. As such we help ensure that the future generations will be secure in God’s Kingdom. As such we have our Sections, bringing our children into God’s dominion and work. As such we heed what Jesus has said, “Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” (Mk 10:14).

Our Lord’s “dominion is vast” (Is 9:6a). We help make it such as we do our mission to the ends of the earth.

Gather

For discussion, answer the following questions:

  1. What is God’s personal mission for me this 2021? How can I be Christ’s light to the ends of the earth?

  2. What are the things that I need to start that I may see this mission fulfilled?

Go Forth

In this special year of mission for our community and for our country, let us take our place in the mission field, and do what we can to bring Christ’s light to this world. Reflecting on a personal level God’s specific mission for our lives and for our families, let us make a commitment to work with the Holy Spirit that these plans may come to pass by God’s grace. Resolve to receive the Holy Eucharist more than once this week as an offering for the mission of our community to be Christ’s light to the world.
