The teacher sees that: Three classes out of four are making outstanding progress. One class has the lower 50% of students learning very little, whilst the top 50% of students are learning rapidly. My teacher inquiry is about the students who are not learning. Why are they falling further behind? What can I do differently to support the learning of these students?

One of my 2018 goals is for 100% pass rate in the Year 10 number internal in term 4. In order for this goal to be achieved I need to unlock the key to learning for these students. Perhaps you can help me? Suggestion Box - please leave your suggests for me.

Teacher response: Student voice has been listened to and changes are being made. It is important to note that only 44% of students responded to the survey, so the results may not be representative. I will check in with students again at the end of term to evaluate the changes made. For the remainder of term 1 website reflections will be weekly rather than every lesson. A shift of focus towards the learning workbooks will save me marking 110 websites a week and reduce off task digital behavior. Although students are not 100% happy, the e-asttle data suggests they are learning at a rapid rate. I believe students enjoyment is as important as their learning in mathematics.

Generally students feel safe and know what to do.
Most students are asking for help when they need it.

26th March 2018: In the two year 10 classes confident students worked through their learning workbooks. The students who lacked prior knowledge sat on the lounge chairs in a semicircle by the small white board at the back of the class. I started from the beginning of the Algebra topic and the small group worked well. They answered questions and gained confidence and understanding. Their reflections at the end of the session were verbally shared then written on paper. I plan to do this more often to support the students who need it.

The work has more algebra and symbols which are hard to get and it is easier to write like symbols than type them
it has some things that you can read to understand, it really helps me understand thing, its good for studying
I just prefer paper.
I like working on my device because it is fast and easy I also like the work on transum.
If you are stuck on a question you can search up on google how to solve it.

Good things about learning online:
That the websites we use automatically mark our answers and it's sometimes easier to keep track of the work we've done. If you're stuck you can look at tutorials online
It's easier to type than write for me & It am able to record everything nicely
Easier access to help & we can do more stuff that's not in the book
It is easier and more fun because the Transum trophy tasks are straight forward.
You know when you should start writing on your website
Good things about Learning Workbooks:
That the explanations for how to solve the problems are written in the book above the problems, which is more helpful than online.
That you can space out your answers
It's nice to have my work on a book
That the answers are at the back so if you get it wrong you can check
It has an in depth explanation of how to solve the questions.

Good things about working with a device:
It's very specific compared to the book
Being able to see what I got correct straight away
It's okay because I can search for things that I don't understand about the work that I do.
I can watch YouTube videos and learn new stuff
Good things about learning in the workbook:
It has a lot more complex things to do and I just like doing math in my book over my device. It's just my nature.
That we have a place to work out things and it explains how to do it
Having a break from a device & you get to write
You can see what you do and everything is year 10 level
It explains so much better and it also is very helpful when doing work because there are examples and many more help.

Conclusion: Stay with the LWBs till the end of term 1 as planned. Students do have the option of working digitally if they prefer, and the links are provided on this website. On Google Classroom students have the login and password for MyMaths which has some good explanations and exercises.
