Resilience in Sports

By Belle Lambert

Professional athletes and their talents can seem unreachable, but many of them have had to overcome many obstacles to get to where they are today. If they did not have resilience, they would not have defeated their hurdles. Many athletes have shared their stories with the world and have inspired others to conquer their own challenges.

Michael Jordan: Michael Jordan is one of the best basketball players of all time, but many do not know that he was cut from his high school basketball team. He has lost 300 games, and he has missed the game-winning shot 26 times.

Muhammad Ali: Muhammad Ali is also one of the best of his sport, boxing. However, Parkinson’s disease stopped his career early. He was inspired to become the best boxer he could be when his bike was stolen when he was 12. He used his anger from the lost bike to learn to fight.

Quotes:

“There may be people that have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do.” -Derek Jeter

“Obstacles don’t have to stop you if you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up/ Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” -Michael Jordan

“I’ve grown most not from victories, but setbacks. If winning is God’s reward, then losing is how he teaches us.” Serena Williams

Mistakes are only made when nothing is learned from them. The point of this article is to inspire student-athletes to always move forward when obstacles are put in front of them. Resilience is an amazing quality that allows people to overcome challenges even if they have failed before, and many athletes have resilience.
