Virtual Assemblies

By Jack Latson and Ella Barchie

In October, students at H.B.W. attended virtual assemblies. Some went to the Our Brotherhood assembly, and others went to the Finding Kind assembly.

The “Our Brotherhood” assembly was presented by Scott Chesney, Verona resident, and H.B.W. alumnis. Mr. Chesney is a motivational speaker and life coach who has presented to over 1.5 million people across 40 different countries. The letter that went out to parents about the assembly reads, “Known as “The Commander in Change,” by his clients, Scott is navigator of life with paralysis for nearly 35 years after awakening to paralysis at the age of 15 from a sudden spinal stroke, Scott has amassed a resume of transformational experiences, powerful insights, and inspiring stories that cut to the core of the human spirit.” The presentation Mr. Chesney presented to H.B.W. students is entitled “Our Brotherhood.” The students who were in attendance of the presentation started off by watching Mr. Chesney’s documentary, “Riding the Wave.” Afterwards, a Q&A session took place, and students asked questions to Mr. Chesney.

The “Finding Kind” assembly was presented by presenters Lauren Paul and Molly Thompson. “Finding Kind” is the title of their documentary, and it was influenced by their experiences in female bullying as youth. They previously presented at H.B.W. in 2017. The assembly consisted of an introduction with the presenters, watching their documentary, and then completing interactive activities, such as making kind notes to friends and peers. After the presentation with Lauren and Molly, students were given the opportunity to go to a post-assembly meeting with the guidance counselors. According to the letter that went out to parents on the assembly, “The mission of their campaign is to bring awareness and healing to the negative and lasting effects of girl-against-girl bullying through the global movement, documentary film, school assemblies, and educational curriculum. This initiative supports the work that our district has embarked on as it relates to school culture, respect, kindness, and mental health.”

Thank you to Mr. Scott Chesney, Lauren Paul, and Molly Thompson for presenting to us!
