Career Feature: Florist

Abbey Donnelly & Grace Traficante

Why did you become a florist, or how did your interest blossom?

Mr. Theobald was following in his family’s footsteps after college. He has a family-owned flower shop that he now owns with his brother, so he always had a path of a career for his future.

Favorite thing to do as a florist?

Mr. Theobald’s favorite thing to do in his Florist shop is interact with customers. He says that some customers he has, his dad had, so he remembers them. He remarks on one nice French lady who is 100 years old, and whenever she orders flowers, he always gets a French lesson! He thinks that it is the little details and learning about customers that make his job so special.

Any difficult things you have to do on a daily basis?

Mr. Theobald thinks that working with family as co-workers can sometimes be difficult because you need to make business-related decisions, which can sometimes be hard. He always states that switching from paper to computer systems in the shop was difficult for a few months because he had to learn a whole new system and struggled with that for a little but soon adapted to the new system. He also says that Valentine’s Day is one of the busiest days of the year for him, and if weather events like storms occur, he sometimes will question if business will boom!

Favorite flower arrangement and least favorite?

Mr. Theobald’s favorite flower arrangement would be the birthday arrangements because they are happy, colorful, and feel cheerful. The birthday arrangements bring joy and color to the shop. Mr. Theobald’s least favorite arrangement would be centerpieces because they are time-consuming and a little boring. But, no matter what, Mr. Theobald puts time and effort into all his work, and he treasures his work.
