2020 Sports

If you look on the fields this season, you might see a lot of masks and temperature checks, but that didn’t stop our middle school athletes from having a good time and playing the sports they love. Let’s see what some of our athletes have to say about the situation this season.

“One thing that has been different this year is that after a game, we can’t congratulate the other team by making a bridge because we have to separate, and instead we have to clap from across the field. It is a little weird.” says 5th-grade soccer player Maisie Skibola. Maisie made an excellent point that we can’t high-five each other, so we are finding other ways to cheer each other on.

“This year, we had to play outside on the grass instead of in the normal gym, which was a little weird, but I thought it was fun,” said 7th-grade volleyball player Olivia Baureis. In Verona, many sports that are usually played indoors had to be moved outside for proper air ventilation, but players still managed to have a ton of fun.

“This season, we had to wear masks and stay distanced, but I am so glad I still got to have fun playing the sports I love,” says 5th-grade tennis player Ryley Capra. Yes, there are a lot of masks and six feet floor marks, but that should never stop you from having fun.

Let’s hear what 7th cheerleader Hannah Crinion had to say: “There had to be social distancing, and we couldn’t do stunts without masks.” Social distancing has definitely had an impact on sports like cheer this year.

8th-grade field hockey player, Kaelin Walsh, said this about her season: “Field hockey is a fun team sport that I really enjoyed. Win or lose, we were a great team!” It is great to see that even though there were restrictions, kids were still able to have a great season.

Dominic Kennedy, a 6th-grade football player, commented, “Our football season was a ton of fun. Even though we didn’t always win, we really enjoyed playing. COVID definitely affected our season. For instance, we had to fill out forms to make sure we were safe. It was pretty crazy, but we still had a ton of fun.” Even though the situations this year were different, the willingness of the players to do what it takes to get a season shows their dedication to the sport.

In conclusion, even though 2020 has been a weird year, sports were still able to take place, and they were a lot of fun!
