Mr. Blomgren's Healthy Living Website

Hi Viewers! Not much is fancy here, but the lesson plans and assignments are posted on Google Classroom and under pages/links on this site.

Dear Parents and Guardians of Healthy Living Students,

(En Espanol debajo)

First note: For the 1st week, students will meet in the gym on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. We will meet in the classroom on Thursday. Normal weeks will be Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in gym and Tuesday and Thursday in the classroom.

I wanted to take the opportunity to provide you with helpful information regarding the basic structure of the Healthy Living class, the topics we will be covering in class this semester, and how to best communicate with me. My goal is for your child to have a positive experience where they can have fun and move their bodies, give effort, demonstrate good sportsmanship and teamwork, and learn the knowledge and skills to motivate and empower them to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce risk factors that may negatively impact their health.

Basic Structure: Healthy Living is a combination of health and physical education. In general, we will be spending three days a week either working on physical fitness and/or developing sports related skills, and two days a week in the classroom covering health related topics.

For the Health Portion, we will follow this progression:

  1. Community Building and Introductions

  2. Substance and Abuse Prevention

  3. Athlete/Actress/Other Fitness Project

  4. Well-Being Plans and Fitness Lessons

  5. Get Real Sexual Education (more to come later in prepping you for this)

  6. Wrap it all up

Fort the Fitness/PE Portion, we will have a mix of the following:

1.Games such as badminton, soccer, basketball, 4-square, and more!

2. Aerobic activities and strength building exercises

3. Some flexibility, yoga, and mindfulness training

Standards will be posted in Skyward, but, in short, effort, sportsmanship, respect, accountability, initiative, open-mindedness, and engagement will be the pillars of the course, and a way for us to have a fun, positive, and gratifying experience together!

Student Supplies: This year due to Covid-19, we will not be issuing PE lockers and requiring Healthy Living students to “dress down” for PE class. In order for your child to be able to participate safely and effectively in the gym setting, it will be important for students to wear appropriate footwear on gym days and clothing that will enable them to move comfortably. It is also strongly recommended that students come to class with a water bottle so they are able to stay adequately hydrated.

As much as possible, I would like to encourage my students to become independent thinkers and learners. If students have been absent, I expect them to access our Google classroom before returning to class to see if they missed any assignments, and begin working on them if possible to try to remain current in their coursework.

Communication: The most effective way to communicate with me is via email. If you would like to speak with me directly, please email me with your concern and a phone number where I will be able to reach you. I will do my best to return phone calls and emails on the same day that they were received. However, I do ask for a certain degree of flexibility to accommodate my teaching and coaching schedule.

Also, Google Classroom and my website (https://sites.google.com/vashonsd.org/mr-blomgrens-healthy-living-we/home) will be great resources for you to know what we’re doing and when the assignments are assigned and due. (Note: I haven’t updated my website yet— but I will-- growth mindset!).

On a personal note, I’m super excited to teach your students in person as many of the students have not have a PE class in two years. Also, I’ve finished my Masters in Positive Coaching and Positive Psychology, so I’m even more excited to add some of those lessons to our curriculum-- particularly at a time when we all can use some help with our well-being.

Sincerely,

Anders Blomgren

Atentamente,

Anders Blomgren

For Quarter 4, you will see a link above for 6th Grade Healthy Living!

Hi Everyone!

My name is Mr. (or Coach) Blomgren. I look forward to teaching you.

Hope you finished your 3rd Quarter strong and I will see soon-- please come ready to be engaged, to learn, to exercise, and to have some fun together!

BELOW is an email I sent out to your parents (and you). It's a little lengthy, but it addresses what we will be doing in class, as well as the best ways to contact me (through email) and where I will post assignments and updates (on Google Classroom and my Website).

Hi Everyone! (Para español, vea a continuación.)

This message is a semi-quick introduction to 6th Grade Healthy Living, the plan for the first week, and the following weeks as we engage in a new model of teaching—this Hybrid Model while also supporting Remote Learning. I’ll try to be brief as I know you have a number of emails and notifications from all your teachers and administrators, BUT there are a lot of details to get us started!

First off, next week (April 12-16) will be a “Friday” schedule every day, so we’ll meet online for 50 minutes. There will be initiation exercises in the afternoon per grade level and you should have received emails from our principal regarding those logistics. The basic lesson plan for each day will be as follows:

1. Attendance and Check-in

2. An Intro Activity—I have a different one each day

3. Logistics for the Course—I will chunk this out, a little per day for the week (there also is a list at the end of this message)

4. A short lesson

5. Fitness—we will start slow, but students should be ready to be engaged in a variety of forms of fitness. (Students can do their workout in front of their computer and don’t need too much room.)

6. Then, finish with an Exit Activity/ Assignment

I will post each lesson and assignment for this next week by 8 am in the morning. For the future weeks, I plan to post them in bunches—Monday and Tuesday, or the whole week at once. Friday will have a regular plan; see below on Fitness Friday.

Healthy Living is a combination of Health and Fitness. If students actively engage and use their time effectively, then they should have very little homework. BUT, there are regular assignments for the course along with participation and daily exercise. The course will consist of community building activities, fitness, physical health, social and emotional health, well-being exercises, substance and abuse prevention, and Get Real sexual education (you should have received an email about this on MONDAY, FEBRUARY 22, regarding the program and optional opt-outs). For hybrid students, we will also be able to play some games, as well, which is something we haven’t been able to do in over a year. Remote students will follow along at home and, at times, be given alternative assignments. There is still, obviously, a lot we’re going to be figuring out in the process of making this a reality.

I’ll list a few more basics below:

1. All lessons and assignments will be posted in Google Classroom and my website https://sites.google.com/vashonsd.org/mr-blomgrens-healthy-living-we/home

2. The best way to contact me is through email: ablomgren@vashonsd.org

3. The basic plan for the week (Monday through Thursday) will be starting with activities in the gym, then moving on to more health-related assignments in the classroom, or when students are working from home. (As I mentioned earlier, this is the plan for now, and I will let you know if and when this format changes as we all get used to the hybrid and remote procedures. And also, in general, I like to leave a little room for spontaneous activities, needed reflections, necessary check-ins, etc.)

4. Friday will be the “Friday” schedule, and we will do a quick check-in, activity, and then it will be “Fitness Friday”, where students do their fitness of choice, document, submit, and check back in.

5. Standards for the course are located in the Skyward Gradebook. (Note: I give feedback and comments in Google Classroom, BUT the grades I actually put in are in Skyward, not in Google Classroom.)

6. My expectations are that students actively engage in the physical education and the health portion, as well as the community building and well-being activities. Students should have their screens on for my fitness routine—I’ve made more than 50 so far in this online experience and try to keep it fresh, new, effective, and fun. IF they don’t have their screens on, then they need to contact me via email to let me know their circumstances and that they are indeed doing the workout.

7. When in person and playing games and doing fitness I expect full effort, even if it isn’t your “favorite” activity. Growth Mindset and Open-mindedness are essential in learning and growing. Also, positive behaviors, respect, and good sportsmanship are expected.

8. Students should have an outfit that allows for movement and exercise. We will go over this more but, in short, this means athletic shoes, pants/shorts, and a sweatshirt or light workout jacket if it’s a bit chilly.

9. Lastly, I’m looking forward to all of us learning about health and physical education, practicing fitness, AND having some fun in the process!

Oh, and perhaps I should say a little about me…. I’ve taught English and PE at the high school for 20 years, as well as Humanities and Healthy Living at McMurray. I’m the head wrestling coach at the high school, and help out with other programs as well, along with running fitness and conditioning for student-athletes, teachers, and more. I also JUST finished my Masters in Positive Coaching, Positive Psychology, and Athletic Leadership.

I look forward to our new wave of education, the spring weather, being engaged in the subject of Healthy Living, and having some FUN!

Sincerely,

Mr./Coach Anders Blomgren

Atentamente,

Sr. / Entrenador Anders Blomgren

Week 1 Healthy Living, 6th Grade 2021 (en Español abajo)

Dear Parents and Guardians of Healthy Living Students,

Hi everyone! I obviously wish that I could be meeting with your student in person, but we are going to make the best of our situation. Below you will see explanations of some of the formalities, but I want to send out a brief personal note first. One of my goals this year is to have pace and to have fun! One of the challenges of having fun is to have everyone buy in—but really, who doesn’t believe in fun? I also think that pace and persistence will be important for all of us, as well as personal accountability—especially in terms of the fitness routines. I appreciate students having their screens on, especially during workouts, or they can contact me to let me know why they don't have it on, and that they ARE doing the workouts that I am leading. This semester, I hope to add additions from my background as an English and Mind/Body Literature and Fitness instructor, as well as my current learning in my Masters Program: Positive Coaching and Athletic Leadership with a Certificate in Positive Psychology.

I am excited to begin the journey of helping your child gain a better understanding and appreciation of their health and well-being at a time where taking care of ourselves and each other is a top priority.

In Healthy Living, students will learn about the different aspects of health: physical, mental/emotional, and social. In addition to the health curriculum, movement will also be part of our class sessions. During a typical 1 hour: 10-minute class period (Monday-Thursday) students will spend the first portion meeting with their teacher and classmates to receive instruction and work on assignments. Then our class session will consist of doing some type of movement which will vary from day to day, and students will have an assignment after we finish Fitness. Students will need to make sure that they attend Healthy Living class wearing shoes and clothing that they can move safely and comfortably in. We will end the week having a 50 minute “Fitness Friday” where students can choose their own movement activity. Students will still need to log in to their Google Classroom, submit documentation of their chosen movement activity, and check back in with their teacher at the end of the period for accountability. We also see our Fridays as a day where students can complete any unfinished class assignments they may have for the week. Our goal is to have little to no homework in Healthy Living class. I also expect students to have a notebook or journal where they can write, respond, and/or brainstorm for our daily/weekly lessons.

Accessing Resources

All class instruction materials and assignments will be communicated to students via their Healthy Living Google Classroom and Google Meet. In addition to Google Classroom, I keep my website updated with our lessons and also what I send out via Google Classroom and Skyward.

I encourage you to visit my website: https://sites.google.com/vashonsd.org/mr-blomgrens-healthy-living-we/home

(It is currently in transition—from last quarter to this quarter—but you’ll see lessons and materials and codes and all that fun stuff there, when you need them.

Communication

The most effective way to communicate with me is via email. Students can reply to assignments and announcements from Google Classroom. I get notifications in my email and respond via Classroom.

Thank you for entrusting me with your child’s education. I can’t wait to meet them!

Sincerely,

Mr./Coach Anders Blomgren

Semana 1 Vida sana, 6. ° grado 2021

Acceso a recursos

Sinceramente,

Sr. / Entrenador Anders Blomgren

Hi Viewers! Below is the Basics for the Course and Lessons, and Assignments, and Due Dates can be (surprisingly) found in the Lessons, Assignments, and Due Dates Section of this website.

Q2 has so far been awesome and I plan on it continuing that way! (As I've mentioned before and post regularly; my website isn't/won't be fancy but it will be functional and (hopefully) readable, with words spelled correctly, and all that jazz. The "meat or tofu" of the course will be found in Google Classroom by your student (or you, if you've been added to the account.)

Thanks,

Mr. Coach Blomgren

Hi Everyone,

I’ll be quick, or at least I’ll do my best. It was and is a pleasure to meet your children and to have them in my class. I felt like our first week together was engaging, even if it was online.

A few notes, moving forward:

-I am working with Carrie Hatfield, the 7th grade Healthy Living teacher, on adjusting our course to fit the 8 week online version. So, here goes, in short: We will start with Wellness and Well-being, then to Nutrition, then to Social Emotional Learning (with some Substance Prevention Abuse lessons), another small Well-Being/Inspirational Unit, then finish with Get Real Sexual Education. More to come on that as we will send out a video together before the end of the month--- *Addendum-- we did that late last September.

-There will continue to be Well-being lessons throughout the semester, just not a complete unit. They will be woven in, when necessary and important, especially as the subject is of special interest to me.

-Speaking of special interest: every day we will do some form of fitness and Friday is Fitness Friday. Most days will be a circuit or I’ll give directions on what they should do for their exercise. Friday, they choose and document. This is not “fool-proof” for online learning, especially the accountability in the fitness portion of this course. Any help and support is appreciated in promoting and encouraging accountability and engagement. Basically every class has 15-30 minutes of fitness built in, and Friday is all about fitness.

-Assignments are regularly posted in Google Classroom and I put a shortened version on my website, under Assignments and Due Dates.

Okay, hope that was quick enough. Hope everyone is doing okay. Once again, it’s a pleasure to have your students in my class this first quarter!

Sincerely,

Mr. Anders Blomgren

Hi Everyone,

Below is the email I sent out to parents and a version of it to students in Google Classroom.

The codes for this week's Google Meets are on your Google Classroom banner and my recent Announcement:

Week 1 Healthy Living, 8th Grade 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians of Healthy Living Students,

Hi everyone! We obviously wish that we could be meeting with your student in person, but we are going to make the best of our situation. During a typical 1 hour: 20-minute class period (Monday-Thursday) students will spend the first portion meeting with their teacher and classmates to receive instruction and work on assignments. We will end our class session doing some type of movement which will vary from day to day.

All class instruction, materials and assignments will be communicated to students via their Healthy Living Google Classroom and Google Meet. In addition to Google Classroom, I keep my website updated with our lessons and also what I send out via Google Classroom and Skyward.

I encourage you to visit my website: https://sites.google.com/vashonsd.org/mr-blomgrens-healthy-living-we/home

(It is currently in transition—from last year to this year—but you’ll see lessons and materials and codes and all that fun stuff there, when you need them.

Communication

The most effective way to communicate with me is via email. Students can reply to assignments and announcements from Google Classroom. I get notifications in my email and respond via Classroom.

Thank you for entrusting me with your child’s education. I can’t wait to meet them!

Sincerely,

Mr./Coach/King Anders Blomgren

Week 10: Final Communication for Healthy Living, 2020

Hi everyone,

Wow! What a year, what a semester, and what a challenge. Thank you for your patience, and for your student’s diligence and willingness to tackle this thing called online learning. I know this whole time has been a challenge for you personally, for your student, and for us in this world. But, it’s almost over, for now, and hopefully in the fall, as well. And, although tough at times—sometimes really rough—I think we can see the silver lining (of the end!) and that we learned something in this process.

The Final Project is in the books and I look forward to looking at them and grading them over the course of this week. I also hope the assignment helped to spur some good goals and plans for your student during our summer break.

One final note: I loved teaching your kids and I wish it could have been in person all semester. But at least we had a few weeks, and I did feel like we still had a connection through the assignments and the office hours. I hope to teach them again sometime.

There are no more assignments for the year, but I will post an Optional Extra Credit Reflection on this whole process.

There will be no Office Hours and Creative Conditioning this week either. (I hope to post some exercise videos on my website over the summer, FYI.)

I think that’s it.

Take care, be safe, thank you, and please give a high five and or fist bump to your student!

Sincerely,

Mr. Coach Anders Blomgren

Week 8 and Final Project!

Week 8 Online Learning— The Final Project!

Hello everyone,

These are trying times, with our current racial unrest amidst our current pandemic and online learning experience. I hope everyone is doing okay, and my best to you all. I won’t pontificate much further here, but I know this whole experience has been a challenge for many of you. And these last few days have been devastating, really making me question where we are, and where we are going. My hopes are this Final Assignment may provide an effective way to channel where we are going, at least on a personal level of well-being, because that’s the best place to start!

In The How of Happiness, Sonja Lyubomirsky states that approximately 40% of personal happiness is up to us (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_URP3-V1sY4). So, let’s come up with a plan.

The Final Assignment: A Well-Being Plan for Summer!

Here are the directions:

1. You will come up with a Well-Being Plan for the rest of the summer.

2. You will include at least five activities you will do during the rest of the summer to keep you healthy.

3. You will explain these five activities with specific examples.

Possible activities could (and should) revolve around exercise, nutrition, sleep, as well as other aspects of the mind (like reading), and overall well-being (like expressing gratitude). Feel free to also include activities such as service, meditation, listening to music, or talking with friends/family/pets.

a. Make sure to include specifics on what activities you will be doing, and when you’ll do them.

1. For example, how long and how often will you run or bike?

2. How many shots will you make or how many juggles will you accomplish each day or week?

3. When focusing on nutrition, what will you eat, and how often will you eat it?

4. How often will you read, and for how long each day, or will you read (blank) number of books the rest of the summer?

5. If you’re going to express gratitude, will you do this by making dinner for your family, sending a letter to a friend who’s having challenges, or something else?

6. Be specific with the Activities in your Plan!

Requirements and Grading:

This Project must submitted in a Google Doc and it must be at least half a page, and preferably you will use bullet points or numbers in describing your activities.

If you do this well, then you will achieve a 17/20.

For a Top Grade, you will add something extra, like a video of one (or some) of your activities, or a graphic comic strip that accompanies your activity or activities—you can draw it and take a picture and submit. You could also provide a series of photographs of you doing the activities you list. Feel free to be creative with your activities, as well as how you demonstrate your “something extra”. If you turn in the Proposal (see below), the Google Doc Assignment, and the “something extra”, then you will achieve a 100%!

Please private message or email me, or ask me in your Proposal (due June 7) if you have specific questions!

Due Dates The Final Assignment is chunked into the due dates below:

1. Due Sunday, June 7: You submit a Proposal for your Project. This doesn’t need to be long (2-5 sentences), but I want to know you’re on the right track.

2. Due Sunday, June 14: You submit your Final Project to Google Classroom.

Take care everyone—high fives, fist bumps, and best wishes!

Sincerely,

Mr. Coach Anders Blomgren

Below are some sample videos of Creative and Functional Activity Plans. While I do want you to list and explain five activities you will do to keep you healthy this summer, you only need to video or draw or diagram one (minimum) of these activities for full credit.

Hello Everyone!

This is Week 7 of our 10 weeks of Online Learning. We are getting near the end and I hope everyone is doing as well as they can be. This week is the second of our two weeks of the shortened Get Real Sex Education. This week’s lesson is on Healthy Relationships. We have the amazing district resources and collaboration with the Dove Project and the VHS Teen Council. We are all certified under the same Get Real Curriculum, and the Teen Council and their advisors are awesome.

So, without further adieu, here is the assignment-- and, remember, if you choose to opt out, then your student can do the alternative assignment. They will both be listed as Week 7 assignments.

The Assignment:

Read the TC HR Couplets slides and watch the videos in the slides, which Lucas and the Teen Council put together. There are a number of videos, but they are short and informative. The videos come from an organization called OneLove, a nonprofit that was founded by a mother whose daughter was killed by a boyfriend. Her wish was to help others be able to identify the warning signs that she didn’t see.

There will be a few questions posted on the final slide. Students will need to create a separate Google Document and submit the answers to Google Classroom.

If you read and follow the slides, watch the videos, and answer the questions in a separate Google Document, then you will get 9/10 for the week. There will be an extra credit question on the slides for them to get Full Credit, OR they can go they can go to Office Hours and Conditioning on Thursday.

I will not describe the Alternative Assignment here, but I’ll post it as a separate assignment on Google Classroom for Week 7.

Also, there will be another Office Hour and Creative Conditioning session on Thursday at 10:00 to 10:30. This is basically a time for us to “see” each other, have a little fun (we have made class mad libs in past weeks), check in on challenges/concerns/questions, and then do a short workout together. I will send an announcement with a little more specific agenda before Thursday.

Students can also reach out via Private Message (sent as a reply to any announcement or assignment) or Email to me with questions, and/or if they need accommodations.

Thanks, take care, I miss you, and my best wishes to you all!

Fist bumps and high fives,

Mr. Coach Anders Blomgren

Week 6 Online Learning: Healthy Living, Blomgren

Hi Everyone,

I hope you’re doing okay and not getting too tired of this online instruction. It is not ideal, but it is what it is and what we have to deal with, so let’s make the best of it that we can, and I miss seeing you in person!

This week is the first of two weeks of our shortened Get Real Sex Education. As I mentioned in last week’s email, there will be two lessons, one per week: this week (Week 6) is on Puberty and the following week (Week 7) is on Healthy Relationships. We have the amazing district resources and collaboration with the Dove Project and the VHS Teen Council.

So, without further adieu, here is the assignment-- and, remember, if your parents choose to opt out, then you can do the alternative assignment. They will both be listed separately as Week 6 assignments.

The Assignment:

Watch the opening video (starring Margot!) and read the slides and watch the videos in the slides, which Margot, Iota, and the TC put together. As they acknowledge in the slide text, the videos can be a little silly and corny, but the information is helpful and useful, and the playful tone helps a little to get some of the point across. This Slide Show is titled "Puberty Lesson!!!" and it is attached in your Google Classroom Assignment.

There will be a few questions posted on the final slide. You will need to create a separate Google Document and submit the answers to Google Classroom.

If you follow the slides, watch the videos, and answer the questions in a separate Google Document AND Submit, then they will get 9/10 for the week. There will be an extra credit question at the end to get Full Credit, OR you can go they can go to Office Hours and Conditioning on Thursday.

You can have your parents watch them with you, or separate, or not at all. That is up to you and your family.

I will not describe the Alternative Assignment here, but I’ll post it on Google Classroom for Week 6.

Also, there will be another Office Hour and Creative Conditioning session on Thursday at 10:00 to 10:30. This is basically a time for us to “see” each other, have a little fun (last week we did mad libs), check in on challenges/concerns/questions, and then do a short workout together. I will send an announcement with a little more specific agenda before Thursday.

You can also reach out via Private Message (sent as a reply to any announcement or assignment) or Email to me with questions, and/or if they need accommodations.

In addition, it is important for you and your health and well-being to continue to stay active for at least 30 minutes a day.

Take care and my best wishes and a big high five and fist bump!

Sincerely,

Mr. Coach Anders Blomgren

Week 5 Healthy Living Online Teaching: Blomgren, 6th grade

Hello Parents, Guardians, and Students,

I hope you all are doing okay and are safe and able to find some peace, solitude, and/or enjoyment in this turbulence. My sincere best to you and your kids, and I’ll try to be brief as I know we all have way too many emails and too much screen time these days. BUT, please read all of the below as there is some important information and a lot to write, especially regarding the next few weeks.

Judith Warner, in Time’s article “All Parents Are Having a Tough Time Right Now”, discusses the real importance of daily exercise and clocked physical activity. In addition, students should clock some serious time reading, as well. And, lastly, working on creative pursuits based on their talents and passions.

The Assignments for the Week*:

On that note (mostly), my assignments this week will be similar to last week: Log your Daily Activity (the Log will be shared in the Google Classroom Assignment). It’s the same one as the last two weeks. Students can also print it out, fill it out by hand, take a picture and submit it for the assignment. If that makes it easier and involves a little less screen time….

Also, write a sentence or two description of the book you are reading—either make it a separate document, or include in your activity log. OR, you can come to Office Hours on Thursday at 10:00 instead of documenting your book. Details for Office Hour and Gmeet Signups will be sent to Google Classroom.

If you do both activity and reading documentation for 4-5 days, then you will receive a 10/10.

But, please read on.

Bonus Well-Being Suggestion:

Sherman Alexie wrote in a short story in Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, that “humor is the antiseptic that heals the deepest of wounds.” On that note, try to fit in some comedy or humour during these next few weeks. Much like meditation, some doctors are now “prescribing” comedy to help promote well-being.

NEXT WEEK (May 19-25) AND THE WEEK AFTER (May 26-June 1): WE (START AND FINISH) A SHORTENED VERSION OF GET REAL SEX EDUCATION—please read the attached Parent Letter.

I’ve been communicating with the Dove Project and the High School Teen Council during much of 2020 to make this happen. Obviously, things have changed in terms of pretty much everything. Since the closure of schools, I’ve continued communication with out principal and the Dove Project/Teen Council and here is what we came up with.

-- First off, you can Opt Out: If you do, your student just needs to alternative assignment. I will post two assignments each of Week 6 and 7: One labeled Sex Ed and one Labeled Opt Out/Alternative Assignment.

n There will be two weeks of Get Real Sex Ed Instruction.

n The topics will be Puberty and Healthy Relationships.

n These will be provided by the Dove Project and the Teen Council based off of the Get Real Sex Ed Curriculum.

n You can watch these videos with your children and they are aimed at a 6th grade audience.

n This is obviously all not ideal—really, nothing is now—but I think this will provide some important content and a chance to learn from some high school mentors (using the curriculum, of course). And, I must say I’ve been super impressed with the efforts and presentations by our VHS Teen Council-- great students, their leadership is spot on, and they are passionate about the subjects and helping younger students.

n YOU DO NOT NEED to tell me if you opt out. Rather, just have your student complete the alternative assignment.

REMEMBER, THIS IS NOT FOR THIS WEEK’S ASSIGNMENT, BUT FOR WEEKS 6 AND 7. I just wanted to give you advance notification and to send the Parent Letter out to you. Remember, this is a shortened version of the program and perhaps a couple of the lessons that lend themselves more effectively to online learning—we will see….

Thanks so much, take care, say hi to your kids, and hope you’re all doing okay!

Sincerely,

Mr. Coach Anders Blomgren

*I posted this portion on Google Classroom for your student, but in case you wanted to see it, as well.

Here is the plan for Office Hours this week, and below are the official assignments for the week. Office Hours are on Thursday at 10:00 to 10:30. I will post the agenda on the announcements before then, but here are the basics (check-in and say hi, conversation, quick workout, reflect and say goodbye). And here’s the code: Healthy Living Office Hours and Creative Conditioning

Thursday, May 1410:00 – 11:00am

meet.google.com/yvt-dqqz-don

Also, regarding Assignments and Assessments: each week is worth 10 points. If you don’t turn it in, then I record this as missing in SKYWARD. I check assignments once a week, and try to give comments every 1-2 weeks. Lastly, starting this week, per district directions: on top of recording an assignment as missing, there is also a non-engagement tab that I will check. (I think you should have received word on this from our principal.)

Week 4 Online Teaching: Healthy Living, 6th Grade, Blomgren

Hello everyone,

I hope you are doing okay and safe, and taking care of those around you. I know these times impact us all differently, so I’ll be quick. But a quick note: as you read in Principal Allison’s email, Healthy Living is not an Elective, and students need to complete these assignments—they are not optional. (However, if there are extenuating circumstances, please reach out to me, or have your parent/guardian do this, and I will adjust my expectations for the assignment and/or give extended time.)

If you have a Private Message for me, feel free to reply to the assignment and I will get it as an email. You can also email me separately at ablomgren@vashonsd.org

This Week’s Assignment (Due Sunday by Midnight):

For a 9 out of 10: complete and fill out the Daily Activity Log attached in the Google Classroom.

For a 10 out of 10: Do one (or both) of the two options below:

1.Give me a one-three sentence review of a book you’re reading Make your review in a Google Doc and submit it. I’ve attached a list of good Healthy Living books (thanks to our amazing librarian, Julie Jaffe). You can also choose your own book—it’s important to take time away from screens and read real books, especially during this time when we are on screens for more than we should be. (But I also realize that getting new books can be a challenge, so reading ebooks is fine.)

2. I will also open up Office Hours on Thursday at 10:00 am. The meet code is: meet.google.com/twu-wntd-kti

The first 5-10 minutes will be to check in, then we will do a small workout for 15-20 minutes. You don’t need anything, but if you have an extra long sock, then that would be great!

OPTIONAL, but fun (and you can use this for your Daily Activity Log): Lastly, I’ve included a Fun Bingo Activity you can do as a family, or siblings can do together. It is optional but fun. Another option is to make your own Bingo activity as a family with options that pertain more toward who you are and your living situation.

Take care and stay safe.

Sincerely,

Mr. Coach Anders Blomgren

Hi all,

You'll see educational and active enrichment options under the Fitness Activities, Health Related Activities, and Project Ideas Tabs.

I'll keep these updated and provide some new options and activities over time.

Meanwhile, now that our Online Schooling is Official, you can see my Week 1-10 Google Classroom and Skyward Communications and Directions below, on this page.

Stay tuned and be well!

Mr. Coach Anders Blomgren

Week 1 of Official Online Learning: Letter Home and Assignment for Google Classroom

Online Learning, “Official” Week 1: Healthy Living, 6th Grade, Blomgren, 2020

Hello Parents, Guardians, and Caring Adults,

We are off, in more ways than one. This will be Week One of “Official” Online-Learning.

Before I get started—and I’ll try to brief—I want to say that I’m sad that I won’t be able to teach your student in-person for the rest of the year. I’ve so much enjoyed your 6th grade students. They are fun, passionate, interesting, and kind, and we’ve had genuine fun together. I will miss that. But, I know I’ll see them again and probably teach and/or coach them again, and I will not take those times for granted. Please give them a high-five or fist-bump for me.

Okay, on to logistics. My role is to send out instructions on Tuesdays. Until I tell you otherwise, Assessments will be due by Sunday at noon (12:00). I will enter grades once a week, or every other week. Right now (starting next week; not this one), I will have Office Hours set up for 10:00 on Thursdays. This is optional for now, as we get started, and students need to sign up with me via Google Classroom if they want to participate. As you’ll see in the assignment—I’ll post below, and on my website, and on Google Classroom—the first week will be more of a “check-in”, a time for us all to be on the same page and to get familiar with online learning. Also, I want to make sure all students are “on board before we take off”. Many students have already registered for my class, but not everyone. Here are the codes:

Per. 2: tkvbtwc

Per. 3: cydry5a

Per. 4: renryez

Per. 5: aqsys5o

Per. 6: wdxfmiu

Assignment Week 1:

Hi everyone,

I hope you are doing okay and had a good spring break. I miss you and look forward to seeing you next time that happens. If you have anything extra to chat with me about (besides the assignment below), feel free to include that in your Assignment #1 response.

Grading: if you do #1, then you will get a 9/10. If you want an extra challenge, then feel free to watch the videos in #2 and let me know if you did either of them, what you thought of the videos, or what other “quarantine activities” you’ve done. This will be #2, and you will get a score of 10/10. This first week is more of a check-in, and to make sure you’re on Google Classroom. Take care and have a great week!

Mr./Coach Blomgren

1. List the top 3 movies or shows that you have seen since we have been out of school. Then, let me know what you’ve been doing to stay active.

2. Watch at least one of the videos below. The first one is a workout routine I made and did with my wife. YOU MUST talk to your parents and have them help you in designing yours, if you want. Ask them and talk to them about it. SAFETY IS THE FIRST PRIORITY. My purpose was to show that we can be creative with how we exercise, even in quarantine. The second one is more for Elementary Students, but it is still fun and you can make it more challenging. Just give me a simple response that you watched at least one of them and did some form of activity based off the concepts and activities.

Week 2: Goals and Challenges: 6th grade Healthy Living, 2020

Hello Parents, Guardians, and Students,

Here are a few quick notes and then the assignment, which is also posted on Google Classroom.

--Grades will be updated on Skyward, NOT on Google Classroom

-- Students should submit their assignments on Google Classroom, due on Sunday by noon BUT have your student communicate with me if there are challenges making that time frame.

--Student questions can be asked via Google Classroom Messaging—they come to my email as a Private Message, or my regular email if there are other issues.

--Sometimes we need humility and (especially now) we need some humor. My colleague recently likened my workout videos to Dwight’s in The Office:

Dwight Opens a Gym

THE ASSIGNMENT: GOALS, CHALLENGES, AND POSSIBLE EXTRA CREDIT

It’s important for us to have goals in life— to see what we have the possibilities to do in the future to achieve excellence. These goals will vary from person to person. But they will be a great starting point for you in this adventure of life, especially considering the conditions we are in now.

1st step: Brainstorm (on your own) a number of possible goals you might have. Start with your passions. What do you love to do? What do you love to do that maybe translates to a future job/hobby/sport/activity?

2nd step: Our second step in this assignment is to IDENTIFY the goal. What is it that you want to achieve? If you can’t decide, then feel free to write down two of them.

SO, THE ASSIGNMENT IS: Brainstorm (on your own) and write a Goal (or two) that you have. This portion of the Goal Assessment is the “What”, in other words, “what” do you want to achieve?

If you turn this in to Google Classroom, then you will receive credit for the work (Remember to Submit it on Google Classroom). BUT, if you want to achieve excellence in our time outside of school, then read on.

CHALLENGE: During this time, we can’t have active competition against opponents and with fans in stadiums. So it’s important for us to create our own challenges and/or preparations for our goals. We have to make the most of the opportunities we have. Examples could be:

1. Run a mile each day and time yourself. Try to get better each day.

2. Do 100 pushups in a day, and time how long it takes you.

3. Do 10 burpees each hour, on the hour, from 10:00 to 5:00 pm.

4. Or, do some sort of improvement plan, where you try to improve at least 1% per day; in other words, do 10 pushups today, 11 tomorrow, 12 the next day…every day until we are done with school on June 19.

See the video(s) posted on how you can also think differently in terms of how you work out and exercise.

OPTIONAL EXTRA CREDIT: Make a video that involves Goals and Challenges. It could be your Goal or your Challenge, or you could fictionalize it. In addition, you can work with others in the class (virtually, of course).

Lastly, here’s what’s due:

1. You GOAL(s) and LIST What you did for exercise for the week.

2. (if you want to achieve a higher score): Describe your Challenge

3. Optional Extra Credit: A video that includes Goals and/or Challenges

Grading:

-9/10 for completing #1 (above) and turning it in by Sunday, April 26, but 12:00 (noon).

-10/10 for completing #1 and #2 (above) and turning them in by Sunday, April 26 by 12:00 (noon)

-11/10 (or more) for completing #1 and #2, AND you do the Optional Extra Credit*.

*If you need more time for the Extra Credit, then Message me on Google Classroom. You can also Message me with questions, and/or sign up for the Optional Office Hour.

For some, the challenge will help benefit the goal, but also, it may be separate and just benefit your life and feelings of self-confidence!

Here are some books and texts I read this summer, am reading now, and hope to read this year. And hopefully some fruitful lesson plans will blossom from my learning!
