--Importance of Sleep-- Articles and Videos Below. Watch video and also, listen to my highlights from the articles.

-Rewiring of Brain, much of it happens during sleep. At least 8 hours is suggested for teens.

-Strategies for Better Sleep: Dark room, screens off at least 30 minutes before bed, don't eat big (spicy meal) late at night.

-Try not to drink too many liquids late at night.

-Caffeine takes 6-8 hours to get out of your system.

-Find the right temperature for you to be comfortable.

-Much of rewiring of brain happens during sleep, and negative emotions are more difficult to re-organize.

-Journaling and/or writing lists before bed helps release these negative emotions to have natural sleep.

-Lebron James treats sleep as a priority, sleeping 8-9 hours a night, and taking naps.

- Apps like Calm or Meditation, Stretching, Yoga, help before going to sleep.

-Also, having your breakfast, lunch, and/or outfits planned helps clear your mind.

-Tips for Creativity: stories from me, Ernest Hemingway, and my dad.

-Make a Plan, make some rituals. Sometimes going to bed earlier and waking up earlier is better.

And pay attention to the highlighted quotes and Assignment Below!

Highlighted Quotes and Insight from New York Times Article are below:

Sleep and Physical Activity will enhance your mood.

And… Allow yourself time to be upset. Then try to direct the bulk of your energy toward that which you can control. What kind of friend do you want to be this year? What do you want to learn and get better at? What can you do to support others? Focus on what remains within your power, because exercising that power will help you feel better.

And revel in your Emotional Super Powers: What makes this power work for you will be highly personal. You might enjoy video games, pumpkin spice treats, cuddling your pet, being in nature, listening to music, going for a run or doing something else altogether.

Now, take time to exercise those Emotional Super Powers. This is your assignment for the rest of the day (and week and beyond)!

Healthy Living, Blomgren, Friday, Dec. 18, 2020

--Attendance, Checkin, Weekinrap

--Festive outfits?

--Any Hygge updates? Plans?

--What did you think of the Psychology video?

--Note on Gratitude, Helping Out, and spread the message of your Well-Being Project!

--Fitness Friday

Check back in at ____________

Then, fill out your documentation, and

Watch these videos: Much of the basis of the Well-Being project is based on Sonja Lyubomirsky in her book The How of Happiness (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_URP3-V1sY4&t=5s) and the premise that 40 percent of our happiness is determined by our choices.

I’ve regularly included these activities and lessons in our class and this video is a little bit of comedy relating to the creativity and flexibility that may be necessary in pandemic and holiday exercise. This is me: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWlljMgA3LU&t=5s)

And this is the more famous episode from Dwight in The Office: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yz7_K-uDb8Y

and make sure to add some Gratitude into your holiday plans (even if it’s not in your Well-Being plan). Helping others and being thankful helps others, yes, but it also helps ourselves in being compassionate and contributing members of our world!

I’m grateful for you ALL, and have an awesome Holiday Break!

Healthy Living, Blomgren, Thursday, Dec. 17, 2020

--Attendance, Checkin, Word Scramble

--Hygge Introduction:

The Danes (Denmark) are famously the most happy people in the world, according to surveys. HYGGE, pronounced Hoo-ga, is a cornerstone of their way of being. Loosely, it means ‘well-being’. Some examples are candlelight evenings, comfort food with close friends, fires, tea, blankets. It is about gratitude and savoring the simple pleasures in life.

(Some similar philosophies/attitudes toward life in other countries: Sweden has ‘Lagom’, and Canada has ‘Hominess’. There are more examples from other countries, of course.)

-Go over due dates, Fitness, and Festive Friday, and see the whole lesson posted on Google Classroom.

Fitness—HIIT (High Intensive Interval Training) Workout—Search for a HIIT workout, and give it a try.

OR, do the workout I did post on Google Classroom.

Then, watch these videos, read this article:

and watch another Psychology Test Video on the Monkey Illusion (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGQmdoK_ZfY)

Feel free to try these experiments on your friends or family. You may be surprised with their Selective or Non-Selective Attention.

Finally, some really tough Homework:

--Practice some Hygge this evening or right now. Hygge it up! And make plans for doing this during holiday break, perhaps with family, or social distancing with friends.

Also, make sure to turn in your Proposal by the end of the period tomorrow.

And get ready for Fitness Friday.

AND, let’s make it FESTIVE FRIDAY—you wear some sort of Festive hat, scarf, sweater, or a onesie. This could be a Santa hat, or even something eccentric like a Hawaiian shirt, or….

I know we may have done a similar assignment before, but I want to attach the text it was inspired by, along with the fact that it's okay if we do something again, especially as it involves mindfulness and stress reduction.

Take time to Stroll and Observe, Slowly. Look at the world like you're a photographer or an artist. Then, list Five Observations you made-- just a list and quick description is fine-- and put your observations in a Google Doc and submit.

Then, brainstorm at least Five Activities you will do to enhance your Personal Well-Being. Write these below your Observations.

Mindfulness is the awareness of “some-thing,” while meditation is the awareness of “no-thing.” There are many forms of meditation. ... Mindfulness Meditation is a form of Clear Mind meditation. Attention is paid to the natural rhythm of the breath while sitting, and to the rhythm of slow walking.

And pay attention to the highlighted quotes and Assignment Below!

Highlighted Quotes and Insight from New York Times Article are below:

Sleep and Physical Activity will enhance your mood.

And…

Allow yourself time to be upset. Then try to direct the bulk of your energy toward that which you can control. What kind of friend do you want to be this year? What do you want to learn and get better at? What can you do to support others? Focus on what remains within your power, because exercising that power will help you feel better.

And revel in your Emotional Super Powers:

What makes this power work for you will be highly personal. You might enjoy video games, pumpkin spice treats, cuddling your pet, being in nature, listening to music, going for a run or doing something else altogether.

Now, take time to exercise those Emotional Super Powers. This is your assignment for the rest of the day (and week)!

Say Hi and Bye and do the following:

--Read the start of this article as a class: https://parentandteen.com/teen-stress-management-plan/

-And watch this video and start coming up with a plan to manage your stress: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmz84pBmLJs

-Then, find a book of your own, not assigned for your classes and spend some time reading.

Tips for reducing stress:

3) Promote reading.

Helping your tweens and teens develop a love of reading is one of the most important things you can do to help them succeed both in school and in life. Model this vital style of learning by reading books yourself. Take it one step further by reading the same book and discussing it together afterward — a family book club of sorts!

BUT, there are some GREAT Apps out there for Fitness and Well-Being. Look up some and fill out the Google Doc Assignment—Listing the App and giving a Brief Description. You can look up Meditation or Mindfulness Apps, or Yoga, or Crossfit, or Nutrition, or Dance, or something else that helps promote Positive Health and Well Being!
