Classroom Technology Q&A

In this section, we've compiled a variety of popular questions that we get often as a department. We hope that this will help answer some of those questions that you may have, or, at least steer you in the right direction.

I would like to request an ergonomic keyboard, mouse, standing desk, and more. Who do I talk to?

Contact the Human Resources Department for all ergonomic requests. If approved, they will order your equipment. Once the equipment arrives, the Technology Department will assist in helping you get it set up with your computer. You may need to Request a Technology Specialist for assistance.

I have a laptop or desktop computer but it's slow and has issues. How can I get this fixed?

As a department, it’s our job to make sure that your district provided computer is functioning properly. We will assist in making sure that the operating system, as well as all required drives, are completely updated. Typically, when the device doesn’t seem to be working like it should, that’s a sign that there might be some updates that you are missing.

As always, if you are running into an issue, Request a Technology Specialist for assistance.

I don't like the laptop or desktop that was provided for me. How can I get a new one?

You will need to contact your school site administrator or head of your department to get approval for new or alternative types of technology devices.

If approved, purchased, and delivered, the Technology Department can assist in helping you get things set up.

I don't like Windows and would like an Apple iMac instead. How can I get one?

You will need to contact your school site administrator or head of your department to get approval for new or alternative types of technology devices. If approved, purchased, and delivered, the Technology Department can assist in helping you get things set up.

I don't like Chromebooks, How can I get a set of iPads instead?

You will need to contact your school site administrator or head of your department to get approval for new or alternative types of technology devices. If approved, purchased, and delivered, the Technology Department can assist in helping you get things set up.

I bought my own laptop, printer, and tablet. Can I use them for work?

The short answer is “yes”.

However, it does come with some caveats.

The Vacaville Unified School District and the VUSD Technology Department are NOT responsible for personal equipment and cannot provide service for such devices. Personal printers are not permitted to connect to the district network, including both Ethernet and Wi-Fi connections. Only district approved and district provided equipment is allowed on the district network.

Personal printers may only connect to district computers via a USB cable. Owners are responsible for the setup, control, and maintenance of their personal equipment.

Personal laptops and tablets may be used at work; however, they cannot be connected to the district network or linked to district devices, such as classroom printers. Due to the limitations of using personal devices, it is recommended to use the equipment provided by the Vacaville Unified School District.

Why?

The reason for such a policy, the bottom line, is security. The Technology Department cannot control what you do on your personal computer and the same security measures cannot be put in place as on district provided devices.
