(9-25-20) Weekly Message From Your Learning Coach Partner
Hello!
I hope you and your children have had a good week. We've been busy enrolling new students and getting them and their Learning Coaches started with orientation and training. Welcome to our newest Learning Coaches!
This message will be much shorter than previous ones because the recordings from our two Info Sessions say most of what I would have said. Please read everything below, though. We have an important milestone coming up that we want everyone to be aware of.
----------
New students were enrolled this week. With the exception of the students who were enrolled late yesterday afternoon and today, every student and Learning Coach should be at a point where he or she can login to Canvas. The section "Phase I -- Orientation" from the UVA On-Boarding Course only takes a few hours and should be complete or nearly complete by now. If you have not begun the UVA On-Boarding Course yet, please take some time to begin. Pace yourselves so that your children are logged in by Monday afternoon at the latest, and so that you have created your Canvas Observer account as well. Login instructions are in the UVA On-Boarding Course with screenshots. Please remember that you can access the on-boarding course on a mobile device. If you are limited to a mobile device while waiting on our school computer, please send me a Remind message or an email so that I can provide instructions for completing everything on a mobile device. I will update the on-boarding course soon to include those alternate instructions, but notifying me will allow me to address your specific situation more quickly.
Our September Learning Coach Info Sessions were held yesterday (Thursday) at 11am and 4pm. Based on feedback from those in attendance, I think we covered some useful topics. I was thrilled to see so much participation during the Discussion segment. Learning Coaches asked for and received help from other Learning Coaches regarding ways to manage time, ways to keep their children focused, and ways to motivate their children. The topics were the same in each session, but the discussions varied due to the participants. The sessions were roughly an hour long. Please watch one recording in its entirety, and then advance the second recording to the Discussion segment so that you can benefit from the exchange between Learning Coaches. It will be worth the additional 15-20 minutes of your time, I promise. Thanks to all of the participants. I hope even more of you will be able to attend next month. The recordings links are below:
September Learning Coach Info Session -- 11am -- The Discussion segment begins at minute 43
September Learning Coach Info Session -- 4pm -- The Discussion segment begins at minute 47
A couple of our parents were kind enough to share some additional tips after the Info Sessions concluded, and I will pass those on in next week's weekly message. They are great!
----------
Please bookmark the homepage to your Learning Coach Communications Hub. I provided a tour of the website in the Info Sessions and many of the Learning Coaches requested the link. When you watch the recording, you might agree.
Next week (the week of September 28th) is a very important week for Louisiana public school districts. Count Day is on October 1st. A public school's enrollment level is verified by the Louisiana Department of Education on Count Day. Enrollment levels determine school funding.
In our online world, enrollment is verified by the number of students who are logged in. All students who were enrolled prior to this week should most certainly be logged into Canvas. They should either be completing the Canvas training course, completing soft start/orientation activities assigned by their teachers, or completing assignments in their courses. If that is not happening, please contact me first thing Monday morning (send me an email or Remind message over the weekend if necessary) so that I can provide instructions to help you get things underway with whatever device you have available.
As I mentioned previously, our newest Learning Coaches and enrollees are asked to pace yourselves so that you have created your Canvas Observer account by Monday afternoon and so that your children are logged in on Monday as well. The Canvas Training course counts as student activity. It is an essential component of your family's on-boarding. Remember, the UVA On-Boarding Course provides instructions for new students to login, and it provides the instructions that you need to create your Observer account. (Creating your account is important so that your child's teachers can communicate with you.) After logging in, the UVA On-Boarding Course guides you and your child to the Canvas training course in the student's Advisory course. Please be sure that you all are logged in to your child's account for the Canvas training course. This is very important.
We really appreciate your cooperation in helping us validate our enrollment headcount to the Louisiana Department of Education by ensuring daily activity (training or otherwise) in Canvas every day next week (and, of course, beyond -- because students should be learning and completing daily assignments after the Canvas training course has been completed.)
----------
Thank you! Have a good weekend.

(9-18-20) Weekly Message From Your Learning Coach Partner
------------
Welcome to our newest Learning Coaches! You received a Remind message from me this week via text, email, and/or the Remind app with the link to our "getting started" course for new families, the UVA On-Boarding Course. Please ensure that you and your children begin that course soon if you have not done so already. If your child was enrolled earlier this week, you should be nearing the end of the on-boarding course. Those of you who joined us on Thursday are able to complete everything in Phase I via a phone or computer.
Our Superintendent, Dr. Clayton, released her September newsletter in concert with an announcement about Hurricane Sally earlier in the week. If you missed her newsletter, I copied into this Learning Coach Communication Hub for you. It is no longer on the Dashboard. You can read the newsletter here.
You have until Monday, 9/21/20 (next Monday) to submit a form to request a student ID badge for your child(ren). The form has been updated so that you may submit the form multiple times if you have more than one UVA child. Please note: Turnaround time is expected to be 3-4 weeks from the date of submission. -- Student ID Badge Form
New Learning Coaches (not this week's newest Learning Coaches, but read this so you are aware) -- Did you return to the UVA On-Boarding Course after completing the UVA Canvas Training course? There are specific pages for Learning Coaches regarding Canvas features at the end of "Phase II -- Canvas Training", and there is another section specifically for you entitled "Phase III -- Detailed Learning Coach Training" that we ask you to complete as well. Please return to the course to complete it if you have not done so already. Here are the links: Learning Coach Login Instructions and Phase III -- Detailed Learning Coach Training.
By next Monday, September 21st, all students (and their parents/guardians) who were enrolled by Thursday, 9/17 should have reached the section "Phase II -- Canvas Training" in the UVA On-Boarding Course. Please pace yourselves accordingly. Students should also be able to login and should have an Advisory card on the Canvas Dashboard by Monday the 21st. (You might not see courses today.) The on-boarding course explains how to login and access the Canvas training course. Although there is an alternate link provided at the bottom of the page in the on-boarding course so that you can proceed with Canvas training if the Advisory card is not on the Dashboard yet, please send me a Remind message, call me (225-421-2837), or email me (ecardozo@uview.academy) to let me know if the Advisory course card is not on the Dashboard or if your child cannot login as of Monday, 9/21.
New Learning Coaches, please let your child's teachers know when your child has completed the Canvas training course if you have not done so already. Your child might be ready for lessons a bit earlier than they are expecting, which is great! We just want to ensure that our teachers have time to adjust the starting point for assignments if on-boarding has concluded more quickly than anticipated. (Be sure to read Canvas Inbox messages for Welcome messages from the teachers, and be sure you have created your Canvas Observer account so you receive teachers' messages as well. Instructions are in the UVA On-Boarding Course.)
If your family is still recovering from Laura and your child does not have access to the internet, please ensure that you have notified the Advisory teacher and do the best that you can to keep him or her posted on your child's status.
With the exception of our very newest enrollees (i.e., enrolled today, Friday, 9/18) and our students who were unfortunately affected by Laura and are still without power or internet service, all of our students should be logged in and working in Canvas every day next week. Recent enrollees will be completing the Canvas training that I mentioned above if they were recently enrolled. The rest of our students should be completing assignments. Here are some checkpoint questions that might help you:
Have you run a Missing Submissions report (aka missing assignments report) at least twice this week?
Does your child have a plan in place to complete any overdue assignments that have crept in? Does he or she need your help developing a "catch up" plan? Do you need input from the teacher regarding the best course of action to take? (TIP: Probably)
Have you looked at each course's grade book (not just at your child's overall grades) recently? Did you notice any comment icons or any MISSING tags? Has your child read the teachers' comments and acted upon them? Canvas Grade Book Icons
Do you need help developing an accountability plan to encourage your child to work steadily and with the intention of learning? Contact me for assistance via Remind, at 225-421-2837, or ecardozo@uview.academy.
Our first Learning Coach Info Session of the school year will be held on Thursday, September 24th as follows:
Times: 11am-noon and 4pm-5pm (Pick a time that works for you.)
Room Link: Ms. Cardozo's Live Session Room
Topics: Based on requests, we will review the Missing Submissions feature and how to juggle schedules (particularly Live Sessions) for multiple UVA students. I will also review a few more topics that I think will be of interest based on the common questions that I receive throughout the week. And there will be a segment for Q&A and Learning Coach networking if time permits.
The room will open 10 minutes before the hour. The session will be recorded if you cannot join us, but I hope you can. The more the merrier.
I will also open my room on Tuesday from 11am-11:30am for my standard weekly Office "Hour" if you want to pop in with a question or need assistance with something.

(9-11-20) Weekly Message From Your Learning Coach Partner
Hello!
We have a few new family members amongst us. Welcome to UVA. If you have not received a "getting started" Remind message from me today, you will before the day is over. A few students were added to our systems after I sent my first "getting started" message this morning. (This weekly message will probably be more meaningful to you later. Feel free to read it now, and remember to return to it next Wednesday to see what few days of orientation and training can do.)
------------
Most of you who were with us before the storm and whom were unaffected by the storm are probably beginning to find your footing by now as assignments and Live Session schedules have settled in. Even though Adobe Connect had a few hiccups this week, you and your children should be more familiar with the schedule by now. If you are still feeling unclear about the daily and weekly schedule, please take some time to review your child's Calendar, and ensure your child does so as well. There is a rhythm to the week.
Overdue assignments that are two weeks old or greater will have temporary 50's assigned very soon, if not already. That will cause grades to drop until the overdue assignments are submitted. Please be mindful of overdue assignments (see #3 below) to prevent this scenario from occurring.
As I mentioned last week, your Canvas Observer account has a very valuable and unique feature-- the missing submission (or missing assignments) feature -- to assist you in monitoring your child's progress and identifying overdue assignments. This feature is extremely important, and we recommend that you generate a missing assignments list every day. Review the list with your child, discuss the reasons the assignments have not been submitted, and recommend ways to minimize those occurrences going forward that encourage your child to develop good habits for studying and applying oneself in school. Please review and follow the steps to generate this very important monitoring report in your Canvas Observer account...everyday, especially if your child is prone to procrastination or is hesitant to reach out to the teacher for help, which can also cause delays (or poor performance). Please do not wait to do this. The list will be very overwhelming if your child has been struggling and/or procrastinating under the radar. Go to How to View Missing Assignments in the Canvas Observer Account for instructions.
The Learning Coach Info Session Survey was completed by a handful of Learning Coaches (thank you!). Thursday was selected as the day to hold our monthly Info Sessions, and 11am and 4pm were the top choices for session times.
Enhancements have been made to this website (your Learning Coach Communications Hub):
a. The Remind Tips page has been updated with a link to Remind's website so that you can learn how to merge multiple Remind accounts if you have more than one account.
b. A Grade Book Icons page has been added that links you to the Canvas Student Guide's description of Canvas grade book icons. Oftentimes there are hidden jewels in grade books that are overlooked (e.g., a teacher's feedback about an assignment) .
--------------
LEAP360 diagnostic assessment results will be made available soon, if they haven't already. This informative assessment is administered several times per year and provides meaningful feedback to teachers, students, and Learning Coaches. Learn more about the purpose of assessments and screeners in the Department of Education's Parent Back-to-School Guide (for students in grades 3-12).
Be prepared to use the missing submissions (i.e., missing assignments) feature of your Observer account to help your child devise a recovery schedule that will eliminate overdue assignments if any exist. Providing guidance promptly will help your child see light at the end of the tunnel. Consider establishing expectations that are supported by appropriate rewards (i.e., game time, other play time, a favorite meal, sleeping late -- whatever is meaningful) for whittling down the list and for avoiding overdue assignments going forward. Being behind and seeing the consequences of temporary 50% scores can be very disheartening. Consider balancing meaningful feedback with a healthy dose of support and encouragement. (NOTE: Please do not assume that your child knows how to plan a schedule alone. Engage your child in the development of a plan, and ask the teachers for input as well.)
Mark your calendar for our first Learning Coach Info Session on Thursday, September 24th. I will host two sessions that day at 11am and at 4pm. Pick the time that works best for you. It will be recorded, but live is better if you can manage it.
Understood.com shared a webpage that some of you might find helpful. Click here to learn about their N.O.T.E. system. N.O.T.E is a step-by-step tool they designed to help you understand more about the struggles you might be seeing with your child regarding school. Your observations will be valuable for your child's teachers if you are seeing some of the behaviors that Understood describes.
-------------------------
We hope our families that were impacted by the storm are safe and in a phase of recovery. Our thoughts are with you. Please keep your child's Advisory teacher up to date on your child's status.
Have a good weekend.

(9-4-20) Weekly Message From Your Learning Coach Partner
Hello!
Welcome to our latest new Learning Coaches! My weekly messages are designed to inform our Learning Coaches about items that you will want to be aware of or take action on.
We hope those of you who were affected by the storm are in a phase of recovery. Our thoughts are with you. Please ensure your child's teachers have been informed.
----------
It's time to do a quick self-assessment to ensure you have completed some important tasks. Please read the list below, and take action if anything is outstanding.
Have you:
Begun the UVA On-Boarding Course if you are new this week? The link was sent via Remind. Please ensure you and your children complete the course over the next few days. You are in a period of transition that will last at least a week from the enrollment date to ensure you are prepared, and then lessons will begin. Details about the on-boarding interval are in the course. (Items 2-8 below are discussed in the on-boarding course. Be sure to complete everything in the course.)
Completed all three phases of the UVA On-Boarding Course if you are new with us this year and started prior to this week? Your child should have completed Phases I and II. You were to continue with Phase III after completing Phase II. Click the previous link to return to the course.
Created your Observer account or paired the account with your child(ren)? Click the following link to review the steps -- Canvas Observer Account Setup or Update.
Submitted a Designated Learning Coach Agreement Form if someone else is assisting you as a Learning Coach for your child(ren)? The form is required so that we can discuss your child's progress with your designate and will have his or her contact information. Download the form via the previous link, and follow the instructions at the top of page one to submit the form to Student Services as quickly as possible (via email is recommended).
Been generating a Missing Assignments report in your Canvas Observer account on a daily basis to guide your child to stay or get on pace? Click the previous link to review how to generate the report...every day.
Been monitoring your child's grades and asking questions to determine if learning is occurring? Is your child simply clicking through the lessons to "get it over with"? Review the following sections of your Learning Coach Corner course for a few best practices to stay informed and to guide your child towards healthy practices for school: Monitor Daily School Work (Closely) , Monitor How Your Child is (Really) Doing
Established a daily routine and considered establishing a reward system to motivate your child so that positive mindsets and study habits are developed and practiced for school? Review the second and third video recordings on the following page to get some practical and valuable tips from two experienced Learning Coaches: A Recap of the Learning Coach Role
Seen the laptop tips in Technology Mart of the Learning Coach Corner Extension? They might be helpful. There are tips for using the Lenovo PC laptop and the MacBook Air. When you land on the home page, click NEXT at the bottom of each page until you reach the page entitled "2.2 | Navigating Options for Technology Mart". Scroll down, review the page buttons and their descriptions, and click the buttons that interest you.
Adjusted your contact information or notification preferences in Remind to receive messages where you want to and the way you want to? Learn what to do in Remind Tips.
-----------
We will begin our monthly Learning Coach Info Sessions this month. The one-hour information sessions will address topics of interest and topics of importance for Learning Coaches. Guest presenters (including fellow Learning Coaches) will be on hand for some of the sessions. Our sessions will be held during the third full week of each month unless we have a school holiday that week. (Alternate dates will be chosen when that occurs.) Please complete this very short survey by next Wednesday, September 9th so that we can select a day and time that works for the majority of our Learning Coaches. I will announce the date in next Friday's weekly message.
Beginning next week, I will open my Live Session room on Tuesdays from 11:30am-noon so that you can drop in to ask questions or to get help if you would like to. I will not have anything prepared. I will simply be there if you want to communicate in the Live Session room. (As an example, a Live Session room is a convenient platform if you need a demonstration of something in your Canvas Observer account.) If this 30-minute period becomes popular, I will extend the time to a full hour and/or will add a second drop-in session to the calendar later in the week. Enter my room by using the following link -- Ms. Cardozo's Live Session Room . (NOTE: This drop-in session is optional and simply provides an alternate way to receive assistance. Calls, Remind messages, and emails are always welcome.)
Next Monday, September 7th is Labor Day. School is closed. (Is your child behind? This is a good day to get caught up.)
---------------
Student work can only be submitted from the Canvas Student account. If the START or SUBMIT buttons are not showing up on an assignment, that means the student is in the Learning Coach's Canvas Observer account. Please ensure your child is logged in to the Canvas Student account, and not yours. (Remember to use Guest Mode if you are sharing the school laptop with your child.)
Assignment retries (i.e., reattempts) cannot be submitted from the grade book view. The student must go to the assignment on the Calendar or on the Modules page in the Canvas Student account to resubmit any work.
When accessing work from the Calendar, the title of the lesson must be clicked on in the Calendar to go to the lesson and to its instructions within the course.
