Hello, Learning Coaches!
Please read for updates and important announcements to take you into the holiday break.
____________
Our November Learning Coach Info Session was held yesterday at 5pm. We viewed a pre-recorded webinar entitled "Social Media, Games & Cyber Safety" prepared by Teodora Pavkovic, a psychologist and certified digital wellness educator from Linewize. Linewize manages our Family Zone cyber safety software and they provide additional cyber safety platforms that UVA will be rolling out at UVA very soon!
The webinar was outstanding!. If you were unable to attend, please consider watching the recording before we return from Thanksgiving Break. And look for our Technology Department to roll out more information about our Cyber Safety Hub after Thanksgiving.
The recording link and an accompanying weblink that was shared during the recording are available on the '21-'22 Learning Coach Info Session Recordings page on this website.
Algebra I students have a LEAP360 interim assessment on Monday, 11/29 (right after the Thanksgiving Break). A subset of our high school students have in-person Fall LEAP 2025 and Fall WorkKeys assessments in early December. Review the October '21 Testing Newsletter for details if your child will be testing.
A new Family Engagement video is posted on our school's FaceBook page. The video is short and very engaging. Check it out here to see if you identify with any of the characters in the video.
Our Thanksgiving Break lasts from November 22nd thru November 26th. Take advantage of the week of no lessons to guide your child back on pace if lessons are overdue.
[Elementary and Middle School] Please read below:
Learning Coaches are asked to schedule their children's tutoring sessions to ensure the requests are submitted correctly. This should reduce the number of instances where a session is scheduled with a teacher who is not certified to tutor the subject. If a teacher is not available in the desired subject area, please send an email to tutoring@uview.academy to report your concern. That will help them track the demand.
New Surface Go laptops are being prepared for shipment! Canvas and Remind messages were sent on November 16th with information about the laptops. Please read the announcement for details so you are prepared to receive the new laptop and return the old one.
School-wide service projects and activities are underway for November and December! Would your family like to participate? View and download the flyer about the program here.
Tutoring Facts:
Session confirmations and reminders are sent to the student's school email account.
Questions should be sent to tutoring@uview.academy
Curriculum Supply Facts:
Curriculum supplies are listed here. Click on the appropriate grade level tab at the bottom of the Google Sheet.
Send questions to curriculum@uview.academy
TIPS AND RESOURCES
Nepris is a company that connects students and teachers with industry experts via online presentations. They have an upcoming Industry Chat series entitled "Careers in the Trades" that might be of interest to students who will be pursuing a trade after graduation. Their sessions conflict with students' Live Sessions. However, you can request a video. Click here to explore.
Remember to use your three-piece Canvas toolkit at least three times per week:
Each course's Grade Book -- Grade books show missing assignments; graded items, including those with temporary 50% scores for assignments more than two weeks overdue; and teachers' comments.
The Modules page -- This course page helps you check the status of the day's assignments (as well as previous activities). You can also see upcoming activities on that page. (Think of the Modules page as a 'table of contents' for the course.)
The Missing Submissions report -- Located in your online Observer account (not in the app), the report lists overdue assignments for all courses in a format that you might find easier to read than the student's Alert Bell report. Click here for instructions.

This has been a very different kind of semester so far with Ida and all of the fallout from the storm for so many. We know many of you are in various stages of Ida-recovery while other families are dealing with challenges of a different nature. In the midst of it all, though, we hope everyone can find something to be thankful for. We are certainly thankful that you are part of our UVA family, and we wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving!
Take care. See you back online on Monday, November 29th!

Hello, Learning Coaches!
This weekly message contains some very important updates. Please read so you are informed.
____________
[IMPORTANT] There has been a change to our November Learning Coach Info Session.
The session is still scheduled for Thursday, November 18th at 5pm.
CHANGE:
Due to an unanticipated work conflict for our guest speaker, we will view a pre-recorded presentation on "Cyber Safety and Digital Wellness" prepared by Ms. Teodora Pavkovic.
Ms. Pavkovic will attend our December Info Session for a short follow-up Q&A session. She sends her apologies for the change in format.
CHANGE:
We will not use Zoom for next week's session. Instead, we will meet in my Live Session room and I will play Ms. Pavkovic's recording so we can watch her cyber safety presentation together after a few introductory announcements. We will also collect questions for the December Q&A session while we are together.
Date: Thursday, November 18th
Time: 5pm (I will admit attendees to the room at 4:50pm)
Live Session Room Link: https://uview.cosocloud.com/cardozo/
Will you be joining us on your phone? Download the Adobe Connect app in advance. When you launch the app, select the Guest option to enter the room.
We will open my LS Room from 12noon until 1pm on Thursday the 18th to provide assistance and answer questions. Use the LS Room link provided in #1 above.
Governor Edwards has proclaimed November as "Family Engagement Month" in Louisiana, and the state will be rolling out several initiatives related to engagement. The LA. Dept. of Education asked all schools to highlight family engagement this month, and they provided a few resources for us to share. We encourage you to check out the following:
Our school's FaceBook page -- A recent post includes one or two very short (and engaging!) videos related to engaging with your children about school. Of course, you are probably doing that already, but these videos are very effective and you might pick up a pointer or two. The videos were provided by the Louisiana Department of Education. Please click here to check out the post.
An October Learning Coach Info Session Recording -- Both Info Sessions addressed two topics that are very much related to engaging with your UVA child about school -- "How to Determine if My Child is Learning" and "Managing Time Effectively."
Don't let the topic titles mislead you. We dove into sample dialogues to have with your child about the school day, and we reviewed ways to help your child develop time management skills by helping them plan their school day and encouraging them to work closely with their teachers.
The approximate time stamps of the discussions are provided. Look for "Learning" and "Managing Time" on the recordings page, and advance the playback bar to the timestamps to see what was discussed.
It's the time of year when UVA launches our school-wide service projects and activities! Shelly Centanni, our Events Manager, sent a message on Monday, 11/8/21 that describes our service projects and deadlines for participation. If you have not seen the pdf file that was attached to her message, view and download the document here. We hope you and your children will be able to participate in some of the activities with us. They will be fun and rewarding.
Next week is the last full school week of November. Our Thanksgiving Break lasts from November 22nd thru November 26th.
Learning Coaches of recent enrollees and others who might have missed it should review the Testing Newsletter that was released earlier this semester. The newsletter contains contact information and test dates that you want to be aware of. Look for October '21 Testing Newsletter on the linked page near the bottom.

Hi and Welcome to November!
I hope fall temperatures are here to stay now. In addition to more moderate temperatures, November is an important marker for me during the school year for a couple of reasons: (1) the one-week Thanksgiving break shortens the school month, and (2) it reminds me that December is a short school month as well.
Believe it or not, only five weeks remain in this semester. Let's take a look at some information that will assist you as we head towards the Thanksgiving and Winter Breaks.
____________
Our November Learning Coach Info Session will be held on Thursday, November 18th at 5pm. We will only have one Info Session that day. (We will consider opening the room earlier that day for a drop in office hour. More on that later.)
Teodora Pavkovic will be our guest presenter at the November Info Session. Ms. Pavkovic is from Linewize, the company that is providing our new Family Zone Cyber Safety Hub, which we hope will roll out within the next two weeks.
We will use Zoom for the Info Session. Please register in advance and put a reminder in your calendar so you don't miss this exciting opportunity.
Here is Ms. Pavkovic's invitation:

(If you did not attend the October Info Session and have not watched one of the recordings to get a sneak peak of the Family Zone Cyber Safety Hub, please watch one of the recordings. It's going to be an exciting and valuable resource for our families.)
If you have questions about curriculum supplies, send an email to curriculum@uview.academy. Before doing so, though, please refer to this K-12 Supplies sheet to see what you child is supposed to receive, and when. First and second semester supplies are shipped separately.
[Grades 3-8] LEAP360 Diagnostic Results for math and ELA are available for review in your child's Canvas account. One of our teachers created a handy "How to..." guide for finding the results. If you have not viewed or downloaded the instructions from the Remind message that was sent on Wednesday, you may view and download the "How to..." guide here.
October PBIS Awards have been granted! Students who received awards received a Canvas message and a Remind message that indicated the award was sent to the school email account. Congratulations to the recipients' Learning Coaches.
Optional social emotional counseling services are available to our students, and today (11/5/21) is the deadline to complete and submit the screener to our Counseling Department. A November 1st Canvas message provides details. If you read the message and have not submitted the screener yet, click the link to the screener that applies to you:
An eSports interest survey was released last Friday. Please ensure your child submits the survey by November 7th. We would like to get as many responses as possible. (Remember, the survey must be accessed using the student's school email address.)
Don't forget, virtual after-school tutoring is here! The October Info Session recordings contain a brief walkthrough of the scheduling tool and more. Check out one of the recordings here to see the walkthrough. Send your questions to tutoring@uview.academy, and read the FAQS page for additional information.
Do you ever visit our school website? Don't forget it's there. :-) A page that I encourage you and your children to visit is the School News page where students and teachers are profiled each month. The articles are great. Check it out!
TIPS AND RESOURCES
Continuing with last week's theme about reading, November is National Literacy Month! Check out this page on the Louisiana Department of Education website. Scr0ll to the bottom of the page to the "RESOURCES FOR FAMILIES" section. It provides links to fun ideas and resources for building literacy skills at home.
Remember to use your tools.
The Modules page helps you check the status of the day's assignments (as well as previous activities). You can also see upcoming activities on that page. (Think of the Modules page as a 'table of contents' for the course.)
The online Missing Submissions report tracks overdue assignments. IMPORTANT: This UVA custom report is not available in the app.
A course's Grade Book shows missing assignments; graded items, including those with temporary 50% scores for assignments more than two weeks overdue; and teachers' comments. Watch an October Info Session recording for information about the "Show All Details" grade book feature that displays all of a teacher's comments so they are not overlooked. (The feature is described in the 'Canvas Tip' segment of the recording. Timestamps are available so you can advance the recording.)

So, lots of announcements today. Wow.
Remember, we only have five school weeks to go before the Winter Break! Guide your child to make the most of it. And remember to reach out to my department and to your child's teachers for assistance if you need support and tips to turn things around.
Be safe and be well!
