June Messages
(Summer School)
(Summer School)
Hello, everyone.
You made it! This is the last Learning Coach message of the summer session. Please read below or listen here.
____________
The regular school session begins on August 5th. You can download the '21-'22 student calendar here.
Some of our summer students are uploading blank assignments. Check all submissions.
Summer school ends tomorrow night, Friday, June 25th, at 11:59:59 pm. Course access ends at that time.
My summer schedule is Monday-Thursday, 7 am-5 pm. I am not available on Fridays, but if something cannot wait until the following Monday, I will attempt to assist you.
[Learning Coaches of students repeating a course] Use the student's Alert Bell Report and your Missing Submissions Report in combination with the grade book to identify unsubmitted assignments. Look for re-do opportunities in the grade book also. Please run the report today (Thursday) and remind your child that tomorrow is the last day to submit assignments. Help them develop a schedule for today and tomorrow that will get them across the finish line.
[Learning Coaches of students taking enrichment courses] Participation was not mandatory, but remind your child that access to their enrichment courses ends at 11:59:59 pm tomorrow (Friday) night so they can take advantage of what remains. Even if interest dwindled, looking at the Modules page over the next day and a half to view lesson titles and step through some of the lesson pages will enhance the preview of next year's course(s).
This article from Understood.com about mood swings and ADHD might be helpful if your child (or someone else's) is living with ADHD. Read and feel free to share.

I hope your child's summer school experience has been positive. Guide them to make the most of what remains.
I will be available throughout the summer except between 7/16 and 7/23. My summer hours are Monday through Thursday, 7 am-5 pm until then. Feel free to reach out for assistance if you need it as you plan for next year.
We have some good things in store for next school year. If you are returning to us this fall, I'll see you then! If not, good luck wherever you go.
Thanks for allowing me to support you. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Hello, everyone.
Happy summer! This message is for Learning Coaches who opted into my periodic summer school messages. If you did not intend to receive these occasional summer school messages during the summer school session, just send me a Remind message. I will remove you from the class.
Please read below or listen here.
Summer LEAP retesting for high school is next week (June 22nd through June 24th). If your high school child is taking LEAP next week, make sure you know when, where, and how many days your child needs to test.
Consider checking your child's Canvas submissions. Many students are uploading blank assignments.
Summer school ends next Friday, June 25th. That's eight days away.
My summer schedule is Monday-Thursday, 7 am-5 pm. I am not available on Fridays, but if something cannot wait until next Monday, I will attempt to assist you.
Stay vigilant. We have just over a week to go. The finish line is in sight.
Hopefully, our enrichment students are soaking up everything they can between now and June 25th. Encourage your child to keep going if there's still interest. Reports coming in indicate most students are enjoying their courses and activities.
If your child is repeating a course or preparing for LEAP, please encourage your child to persist. Apply positive incentives, pats on the back, and clarity about what remains. Assist your child with a recovery plan, if required, and use your tools* to bring awareness to your child about anything overdue.
* Use the student's Alert Bell Report and your Missing Submissions Report in combination with the grade book to identify unsubmitted assignments.
Memory (not necessarily memorization) is a critical factor in learning. I discussed memory in one of our Learning Coach Info Sessions last year because understanding how memory works can assist you in guiding your child to use learning strategies and study habits that push information into long-term memory. That's where it needs to be so we can recall concepts and skills later.
You can watch the info session segment on memory and learning in the November '20 Info Session recording. Just advance the play bar to minute 38. The topic begins shortly after that.
You can learn even more about working memory (one of three main parts of memory) in a recent article from Understood.com. It's worth reading. You can apply some of what they suggest right now.

Okay, folks. Stay the course and guide your child to make summer school worthwhile. Let me know if I can help.
Have a good weekend!

PBIS is in effect for the summer term! Need more info? Click here.

Summer enrichment activities are available for all students. Look for enrichment opportunities on the Canvas calendar. They are visible as long as the Counselor's Corner card is checked on the far right side of your calendar window. Reports indicate that students are having a blast!
Summer school ends on June 25th.
Final grades are in the Student Progress Center. Please ensure you are using the username that you established when you set up the account previously. The username is not likely to be your child's email address unless you specifically entered that when you set up the account. Refer to this document for a reminder about the Student Progress Center. Contact me if you need assistance.
Please read your Canvas notifications and Remind messages at least once per day. Teachers and counselors will be communicating frequently.
The most important tip for Learning Coaches of students who are taking courses for remediation (K-8) or credit (high school) is this:
Be vigilant.
There is no time to waste. Most students are completing a full course in four weeks. Our counselors have been contacting families throughout this second week of the summer session when students have not been engaged. I hope you received their messages and have taken the necessary steps to establish clear expectations for summer school engagement with your child.
We want our students to be successful, but that requires a particular kind of oversight from our Learning Coaches during this compressed interval. So, I encourage you to do the following if you have not been doing so already:
Use the student's Alert Bell Report and your Missing Submissions Report in combination with the grade book to identify unsubmitted assignments. (If you've read that message all year long you might notice I said "and" not "or". You need to catch anything that the Alert Bell Report might not pick up or that might be hidden in the Alert Bell report's other tab.
If there are overdue assignments, establish a clear recovery plan identifies the dates you expect the assignment to be submitted, and discuss your expectations about the quality of the work. (Submitting an assignment to get it off of the overdue list but applying minimum effort and not attempting to learn is not going to pay off next year.)
Set clear and firm expectations with your child that daily assignments will be completed on schedule once the student has caught up.
June 25th is a hard date for the end of summer school.
--------
Please contact me if you are not familiar with the Alert Bell and Missing Submissions Reports. The links in the previous sentence take you to pages that show you how to run those reports, but I will walk you through them.
If you need help developing recovery plans for your child to get on track, you can contact me about that, too, or reach out to the teacher.
If you need help establishing clear expectations for engaging in school, ask me for suggestions. I can help. We can conference with your child if necessary.
Let's make summer school a successful experience for your child.
Have a good weekend!
