Hello, Learning Coaches!
This is the final weekly message for the regular school year! Please read below or listen here.
Today is the last day of the 2nd semester! Students have until 11:59 pm tonight (May 20th) to submit assignments. Course access ends at midnight.
Final grades will be available in the Student Progress Center next week. Refer to this document if you need to set up your account or need a reminder about how to access the website. Contact me if you need help.
Internet Subsidy cards will be mailed within the next few weeks. Please refer to the Canvas announcement that was sent about the cards on Monday. (A copy of the announcement is on the School Announcement page on this site.)
An important Canvas message was sent on Tuesday regarding the Parent and Family Engagement Survey for the Louisiana Department of Education. The survey is due May 28th. The detailed message about the survey is in your Canvas Inbox. You probably received it as a Canvas notification in your personal Inbox (or your Spam or Junk folder) if you created your Canvas Observer account. However, the entire message is available for you on the School Announcements page on this site. Please read the information about the survey and complete it by the deadline.
Congratulations to the Learning Coaches of the students who performed in our very first UVA Band Program (Virtual) Recital on Tuesday. The students did a great job with piano, wind, string, and vocal performances! Please click here to watch with the family and enjoy the musical talent of some of our elementary, middle, and high school students!
Summer school begins on June 1st and ends on June 25th. Read your Canvas communications and/or Remind messages about summer school for credit recovery and summer enrichment courses.
[$'s] The FCC's Emergency Broadband Benefit Program provides a temporary discount on monthly broadband bills if your household qualifies. Learn more here and find out if your family qualifies for a temporary $50 reduction in monthly broadband fees. (Please note: UVA is not affiliated with this federal program. We are passing this information on as a courtesy.)
[$'s] P-EBT opportunities for the '20-'21 school year are being identified. A school-level communication will be sent when UVA has concluded its discussions with the state.
Seniors graduate on May 29th. Nine days and counting!
The '21-'22 fall semester begins on August 5th, 2021. An updated student calendar is available to download here.
If your child is attending Summer School, please continue to read your Canvas notifications and Remind messages. And listen to voice messages to stay on top of school communication. Teachers will be communicating Live Session times and course requirements soon if they have not done so already. Counselors and other members of the faculty will be sending messages as well. Stay informed.
I will send periodic messages to keep Summer School Learning Coaches informed in June.
Feel free to contact me during the summer. Summer is a good time to reflect upon what worked well for you and your child this year and where there are opportunities to make some changes for next school year. If you want to bounce around some ideas for '21-'22 over your summer break or want to spend some time reviewing training modules, just call, email, or send me a Remind message. I'll be here!

Well, you made it through another year! And what a year it was.
Congratulations to those of you with graduating seniors. Well done!
Best wishes to those of you who will not be returning next year.
I enjoyed working with you and supporting you.
Make the most of the summer, everyone.
Take care!

Hello, everyone!
Important information is below. Please read or listen here.
-----------
Next Thursday, May 20th, is the last day of school. Students have until 11:59 pm on May 20th to submit assignments. Course access will end at midnight.
Summer school begins on June 1st and ends on June 25th.
If an elementary or middle school student is failing math, science, social studies, or ELA at the end of the semester, enrollment in the associated summer school course is automatic. Before LEAP testing began, Advisory teachers sent a Canvas message to the student and Learning Coach if the student was in jeopardy of failing at that time. Please read your Canvas messages.
If a middle school elective is being taken for a high school credit and the student is failing the course when the semester ends, summer school enrollment in the associated course is automatic. An Advisory teacher notification was sent to the student and Learning Coach if the student was at risk of failing the elective before LEAP testing began. Please read your Canvas messages.
High school students and Learning Coaches received a Summer School notification within the last few weeks if the student failed fall semester courses. Additional communications are forthcoming about summer school for high school students.
Students who passed their courses have an opportunity to participate in not-for-credit, enrichment courses during the summer session. These courses provide valuable, low-stress opportunities to preview course content for the '21-'22 school year.
Survey links were sent last Friday for elementary and middle school enrichment courses. The deadline to submit the survey is May 18th.
A communication will be sent soon regarding high school enrichment courses.
[$'s] The FCC's Emergency Broadband Benefit Program began in late February. This is a federal program that provides pandemic-relief for eligible families. You receive a temporary $50 monthly discount on broadband bills if your household qualifies. Take a minute to learn more here. Your family might qualify! (UVA has nothing to do with this program.)
[$'s] P-EBT opportunities for the '20-'21 school year are being determined for our students. The following message was sent by our administration Wednesday afternoon:
"UVA is actively working on determining student eligibility for the P-EBT funds for the 20-21 school year. Additional information will be communicated to UVA families once it has been received from DCFS and LDOE. Please visit http://www.dcfs.la.gov/page/pebt-louisiana for information from DCFS."
Stay tuned...
The '21-'22 fall semester begins on August 5th, 2021. Click here to view and download the calendar.
Seniors graduate on May 29th. Fifteen days and counting!
Kindergarteners are hosting their virtual graduation this morning, Friday, May 14th. Congratulations to our K Learning Coaches!
Check for and read school communications twice per day until school ends so you don't miss anything. "Communications" means Canvas messages (or your email account if you read your Canvas messages there; check your Spam or Junk folder); Canvas Dashboard Announcements; Remind messages (app or text/email); and voice mail.
Remember -- 11:59 pm on May 20th is the deadline for students to submit assignments.
Use the student's Alert Bell Report or your Missing Submissions Report in combination with the grade book to identify unsubmitted assignments.
Look for re-do opportunities in the grade book. They can boost a final grade.
Your child might need your assistance establishing a schedule for completing overdue assignments on time. Be prepared.
Read messages from teachers and counselors about strategies to work through remaining assignments.
It's not too late to have a strong finish. Be encouraging and guide your child to keep going!
Every page of this Learning Coach Communications Hub has a reminder at the top about my weekly office "hour" on Tuesdays at 11:00 am in my Live Session room. Contact me any time as usual, but take advantage of the opportunity to pop into my room and get assistance next Tuesday for last-minute questions. The Live Session room works well when you need online assistance (e.g., navigation to the Student Progress Center).
Most of you have done this already but if you have not set up your Student Progress Center account, please do it while thinking about it. Final grades and transcripts will be uploaded to that site after teachers have finalized their grades.
Read this document and scroll down to "Option C" to get started if you need to set up your account. (If you set up your Student Progress Center account previously but you've forgotten how to access it, click the previous link and read Option A or Option B for a refresher about where to go and what to do.)
---------
It's been a busy year, folks, but the end is in sight. Hang in there a few more days!
Have a good weekend.

The '21-'22 school calendar is available on our school website! The fall semester begins on August 5th, 2021. Click here to view and download the calendar.
Summer school enrichment and credit recovery courses will be offered in June. Summer school begins on June 1st and ends on June 25th. Keep your eyes open for school communications about the programs and courses that will be available during Summer School. Communications were released already this morning from our Elementary and Middle Schools. Check them out. The high school communication will be released soon.
Lake Charles students in grades 3-8 have a couple of days of LEAP testing next week. Be sure to take your child to the test site to complete testing as scheduled. Locate the LEAP letter in the student's Canvas account as follows: Account > Files > Testing Information. (Remember to take the laptop and power cord each day.)
Please read school communications if your child is scheduled to take in-person AP tests or make-up tests next week to ensure you have dates, times, and locations.
Our AP and Talented Art Seniors' Spring Virtual Art Exhibit is impressive! Click the following links and take a few minutes to view and enjoy the students' artwork:
School ends on May 20th -- less than two weeks away!
Refer to this page on our school website for important dates, upcoming events, and school milestones.
Use the student's Alert Bell Report or your Missing Submissions Report in combination with the grade book to identify unsubmitted assignments.
Guide your child to complete overdue assignments and to take advantage of all re-do opportunities. Doing that will give your child the best opportunity to learn expected content and that grades are their best before the school year is over.
Seniors graduate on May 29th (in-person or online), and our kindergarteners will have their virtual graduation on Friday, May 14th.
Read school communications every day. Check twice per day if possible. This is a busy time of year.
Sometimes it becomes challenging for students to focus on school after they finish in-person testing. School is "over" in their minds. However, our students need to complete upcoming assignments, overdue assignments and re-do opportunities. Encourage your child to maintain or improve grades before the semester ends. Stay vigilant and use the Alert Bell Report or run your Missing Submissions Report to guide recovery efforts. The end is in sight!
---------
Thanks to everyone whose child attended in-person testing the last few weeks and to those who still have testing to come. We know you had to make sacrifices to get your children to our test sites. We appreciate your cooperation and your efforts.
Have a good weekend.
