Hello, everyone!
We are welcoming our final set of new Learning Coaches for this fall to their first weekly message. Weekly messages keep you informed and provide information to assist you in your Learning Coach role. Please note that some of the messages will have more meaning as your child begins learning, but read everything below and make a note to return to the message later if you need to.
____________
Our Learning Coach Info Sessions were held yesterday. The links to the recordings are available here. (NOTE: You might want to read this entire message before clicking the link. When you click, you'll very likely be taken to the recordings page in this window. To return to this page, use the navigation links on the left side or click the three-bar menu in the upper left hand corner of the window, whichever is visible on your device. The navigation path to return to this page is Messages From Your Learning Coach Partner > Messages for the '21-'22 School Year > October '21.)
The sessions included:
An introduction of my team
A presentation about the new after-school tutoring program
Two exciting announcements about (1) our expanding our UVA esports program and (2) the new Family Zone Cyber Safety Hub offering for families.
Presentations on the topics the majority of you requested in a survey a couple of weeks ago -- How to Determine if Your Child is Learning and Managing Time Effectively.
The 12 noon and 5pm recordings are available. Select either recording to see and hear what was discussed!
Elementary Clubs are starting soon! The first club day is today. Refer to the announcement on the Dashboard for details.
[Grades 7-9] Today is the final day to apply for membership in the National Junior Honor Society. The announcement is on the Dashboard. Please have your child apply before the day is over if interested.
An esports interest survey is coming your child's way today! I mentioned the survey and the expansion of our esports program in the info sessions yesterday. There's much more on the horizon for UVA Esports that I didn't mention yesterday. So stayed tuned for those announcements, but for now, please allow your child to respond to the survey so we can develop a program that they will enjoy being a part of.
Virtual after-school tutoring is here! The Info Session recordings contain a brief walkthrough of the scheduling tool and more. Check out one of the recordings here to see the walkthrough. Send your questions to tutoring@uview.academy.
TIPS AND RESOURCES
We discussed reading challenges very briefly in the Info Sessions yesterday, and Understood.com must have been listening. They sent a link to an article entitled "4 Reasons Kids Get Anxious About Reading -- and How to Help." Check it out, and remember -- UVA offers reading (and math) intervention. Talk with your child's ELA (or math) teacher for more information.
Don't forget to use your tools.
Use the Missing Submissions report to track overdue assignments. The report is only available in your online Canvas Observer account. (This UVA custom report is not available in the app.)
Use the Modules page to monitor the status of the day's assignments as well as previous activities.
That's it from us this week, folks. Short and sweet. I encourage you to watch one of the Info Session recordings this weekend so you are in the know about new things that are on the horizon and can pick up a few tips that might boost your Learning Coach efforts.
Enjoy the great fall temperatures.
Be safe and be well!

TIPS AND RESOURCES
Some of our students have personal Chromebooks. However, Chromebooks do not support Canvas very well. In recent weeks, students who wanted to use their Chromebooks discovered they cannot access some of their assignments or cannot access some of the external websites that courses are linked to. Although it is usually okay to use a personal computer for most schoolwork at home, Chromebooks fall short of the mark.
Have you established a routine to run the Missing Submissions report in your Canvas Observer account every day? Please do. The report identifies overdue gradable assignments from the day before or prior. (Many assignments are not associated with a grade. More below in #3.)
Used daily, this browser-generated report (not app-generated) is a very effective tool that can prevent a huge backlog of assignments if it is run daily.
Please note: This report does not identify:
a) Gradable assignments that are due the day the report is run.
b) Overdue assignments that do not have a grade associated with them.
Click here for a refresher on how to run the Missing Submissions report.
Are you reviewing the Modules page as part of your daily routine? If not, add that to your daily practice as an accompaniment to the Missing Submissions report. Typically, at least one foundational assignment precedes a graded item on the Modules page. Examples include:
An introduction to a topic or concept
A review activity that precedes an assessment
Those kinds of assignments seldom have grades associated with them, but foundational lessons are where learning occurs (in conjunction with the teacher's Live Sessions). They are critical to a student's comprehension of a skill or topic.
So, review the Modules page every day and pay attention to:
Red circles (i.e., an incomplete activity) and green checkmarks (i.e., a complete activity) on the right side of the page.
"View" vs. "Viewed" and "Submit" vs. "Submitted" below the title of the assignment. Past tense (i.e., viewed
or submitted) indicates the assignment was completed (or at least opened in the case of a viewable -- i.e., read-only -- activity). This information is helpful for monitoring completion of activities on the day of the assignment, especially the activities that do not have a grade associated with them.
Enjoy the nice weather this weekend. (At least I think it will be nice statewide. ) It's finally feeling like October!
And welcome "home" to our families who were displaced and are beginning to settle in somewhere. Continued thoughts and prayers for everyone's recovery.
Be safe and be well!

#2 - Missing Submissions
Hello, Learning Coaches,
Welcome to the beginning of the second nine-week period! As the principals stated yesterday, today provides a fresh start for our students to regroup and get a fresh start for the last half of this semester.
Read below for announcements, reminders, and tips, or use the audio link if listening will be more convenient.
________________
The second nine-week period began today as I mentioned above. The Student Calendar is available here if you have not downloaded it.
A Principals Town Hall Meeting was held yesterday, October 7th at 3 pm. Here is the recording if you missed the session or want to re-watch it.
Our PBIS program is launching next week! I continue to promote this incentive program because your child can earn real $'s (Amazon credits) for engaging well in school. To review the essentials of the PBIS program, click here.
[Grades 3-8] LEAP 360 Diagnostic Assessments will be given on October 18th - ELA, October 19th - Math. Login information will be uploaded into your child's Canvas account before the 18th.
[High School] Virtual College Visits are underway. The schedule is below as a reminder.
10/8 at 10 am: Northwestern State University (Sorry. I couldn't release this message before 10 am)
(Today!) 10/8 at 1 pm: Southeastern Louisiana University
10/15 at 1 pm: University of Louisiana at Monroe
10/22 at Noon: Xavier University
A new nine-week period presents a great opportunity to establish or modify routines or to implement practices that might have fallen to the side in the wake of Ida and other interruptions. You have a fresh start, too. The tips below might help.
Establish a daily routine to run the Missing Submissions report in your Canvas Observer account. The report identifies overdue assignments (i.e., Missing Submissions) from the day before or prior.
Running the report daily will prevent a huge backlog of assignments. If you run it this weekend or Monday morning and run it daily from then on, your child will be able to stay on top of assignments without falling behind. Remember, it's a clean slate as of today. Click here for a refresher on how to run the Missing Submissions report.
There is a student version of a missing submissions report called the Alert Bell. Your report is more comprehensive, but set an expectation that your child will check the Alert Bell report daily (and that the overdue assignments will be completed). That way, when you run your report, you will not find anything! Navigation instructions to the student's Alert Bell are also available here.
Progress reports will be released late next week. The Student Progress Center is the location for progress reports, report cards, and transcripts. After teachers finalize the nine-week grades, progress reports will be loaded into the Student Progress Center. You will be notified when the reports are available.
A document entitled "Parent Info" will be uploaded to your child's Canvas account (not your Observer account) if you are new this year. The document explains how to set up the Student Progress Center account. Please read this document for instructions on locating the Parent Info document. (Returning Learning Coaches can use that same link for a refresher on accessing the Student Progress Center. )
Remember, 1st nine-week progress reports will not be available until late next week.
If your child has been submitting blank pdf assignments and you know the work was done, that is probably because the document was edited in the browser. A quick browser setting change forces pdf files to download to the computer automatically, eliminating the risk of editing the pdf file in the browser and submitting blank documents. This page in Learning Coach Corner explains how to update the required setting in Chrome. I do not have instructions for Microsoft Edge. I'm sorry.

So, take a deep breath. It's a new day and a new nine-week period. Let's do it again and make it great! (And hope for no additional hurricanes!)

Hello, Learning Coaches,
This is an early edition of the weekly message because we are closed Monday and Tuesday for Fall Break, and I want you to have time to take action tomorrow for some of the things that I am mentioning below if they apply to you.
Another group of new families joined us this week. They are onboarding at this time. Welcome to your first weekly message for Learning Coaches! Make a note to return to the message after you finish onboarding if some of the items do not apply today.
Here is the audio link for today's message if listening will be more convenient. Just be prepared to return to this page to access web links.
________________
Tomorrow (October 1st) is Count Day for public schools in Louisiana. This is a very important date for all public schools. Funding is determined by a school's enrollment numbers. Our enrollment numbers are verified by the number of students who log in to Canvas on Count Day. Please ensure your child logs in tomorrow, Friday, October 1st.
NOTE:
If your child is new this week and does not have access to a computer so you can proceed with Phase II (i.e., Canvas training) in the UVA Onboarding Course, please send me a Remind message as soon as possible.
A Principals Town Hall Meeting will be held next Thursday, October 7th at 3 pm. This meeting is for Learning Coaches, not students. We would like to have as many of you in attendance as possible. The flyer that announced this opportunity is available here. An active link to the online Auditorium is on the flyer.
Our PBIS program will launch the week of October 11th (a date change). For a refresher on our PBIS program, click here.
Fall Break is Monday, 10/4, and Tuesday, 10/5. The school will be closed on those days. However, the UVA Help Desk will be open for technical support at 225-286-1600 (M-F, 7 am - 6 pm)
The first nine-week period ends on October 7th.
[Elementary] LEAP 360 Diagnostic Assessments will be given on October 18th - ELA, October 19th - Math. Please read your Canvas messages regularly. Additional information will be provided as we get closer to those dates.
[High School] Virtual College Visits are underway. The schedule is below as a reminder.
10/8 at 10 am: Northwestern State University
10/8 at 1 pm: Southeastern Louisiana University
10/15 at 1 pm: University of Louisiana at Monroe
10/22 at Noon: Xavier University
You can generate a custom Canvas report in your Observer account that will identify overdue assignments (i.e., Missing Submissions). The report should be run daily for the best opportunity to prevent a huge backlog of assignments (during normal times). It is especially important to run it now so you can guide your child towards the end of this first nine weeks. It will also be a useful tool for discussions with your child's teachers if you were impacted by Ida. Click here for a refresher on how to run the Missing Submissions report.
(New Learning Coaches, this information is in Phase III of the UVA Onboarding Course. If it doesn't sound familiar to you, you might have stopped short during onboarding. Here is the link to Phase III.)
Remember, your child's teachers are ready to make adjustments to your child's lessons if you were impacted by Ida and came back online late. It's getting close to the end of the first nine weeks, but it's still worth contacting the teachers for any assistance they can provide. Please do not wait until the end of the day on Friday to request help. Remember, we are closed Monday and Tuesday next week.
School laptops need to be restarted several times per week to operate well. Every other day is not a bad idea. Daily is even better.
The Student Progress Center is the location for progress reports, report cards, and transcripts. After teachers finalize the nine-week grades, progress reports will be loaded into the Student Progress Center. You will be notified when the reports are available.
A document entitled "Parent Info" will be uploaded to your child's Canvas account (not your Observer) account if you are new this year. The document explains how to set up the Student Progress Center account. Please read this document for instructions on locating the Parent Info document. (Old timers can use that same link for a refresher on accessing the Student Progress Center. )

We know it's been challenging the last few weeks. Many of your children will be completing school work during Fall Break, but try to squeeze in a little downtime or provide something fun for your child to do during the four-day weekend if you can. We appreciate your dedication.
Be safe and be well, everyone!
