ROLE OF STRUCTURES
The Structures Division is comprised of Bridge Management, Structures Design and Geotechnical Design. Bridge Management focuses on the responsible management of the in service bridge inventory. Structures Design and Geotechnical Design focus on project delivery. The Structures Division aligns activities to support the Department Strategic Direction and reports on performance. The Structures Division receives funding each year to support the Bridge Programs.
Focus areas of the Structures Division include:
Bridge In-Service Inspection
Data management
Load Rating
Structures Design (wall, headwall, overhead sign structure, box culvert, bridge element such as deck or girder)
Bridge Planning (preservation recommendations, scope and estimate)
STRUCTURES LEARNING OBJECTIVES
As part of the structures rotation, you may:
Gain knowledge on the various types of structures, elements of bridges
Assist with bridge geometry/layout, vertical clearance
Develop/check quantities (estimate)
Participate in the project delivery process
Read and develop plans
Exposed to structural design codes, requirements, and structures software
Experience the coordination between structures and construction
Understand relationship between plans, specifications, and estimate
Recognize the relationship between in-service inspection, planning, and project delivery
Learn about Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC)
Assess structural condition and develop repair recommendations
