The Utah Department of Transportation hires the best and brightest to participate in our four-year Rotational Engineer Program. This program offers rotations in a variety of areas including design, materials, hydraulics, planning, right-of-way, structures, traffic, construction, and etc. Our newly-graduated engineers learn to apply the knowledge and techniques of advanced mathematics and engineering to the planning, designing, development, and construction of transportation projects.
In addition to gaining experience, our rotational engineers are paired with well-regarded mentors who offer guidance and support as they determine which engineering specialty is best for them.
The Rotational Engineer Program also provides the opportunity to work toward the Civil Engineering P.E. exam while earning a salary and gaining great experience.
The best candidate for the Engineer I level will have
A Bachelor's degree, or higher, in Civil Engineering.
Proof of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE).
The best candidate for the Engineer II level will have the same qualifications as the Engineer 1 level plus:
At least two years of post-graduate engineering experience
The program is intended to train our rotational engineers to move to full time career positions if it works for both parties. Rotational engineers are encouraged to begin applying for full-time positions competitively after 3½ years in the program.
It may be possible to be released from the program before three years if required by region or department business needs. Region Directors working with the UDOT Deputy Director will have flexibility in using Rotational Engineers to fill region personnel needs. It is important to work with you Region Coordinator to discuss these options.
Rotational Engineers are hired with the understanding that they are flexible and mobile during their time in the Rotational program and being part of the team.
