ROLE OF MAINTENANCE
UDOT Maintenance is responsible for maintaining state owned roadway facilities. These roadways include interstates and expressways, along with primary and secondary roads. Maintenance cares for many types of assets such as barrier, pavement (patching), striping, signing, litter, mowing, snowplowing, etc. To better serve the public, UDOT Maintenance has over 80 local maintenance stations throughout the state belonging to one of the four regions.
Central maintenance assists in supporting the maintenance crews by providing support and funding tools and knowledge to be able to understand and perform their job better on a day to day basis. They also establish a consistent approach to evaluating assets and and setting targets to achieve performance for the entire organization. They work closely with the regions to learn from those in the field, identify best practices, and incorporate recommendations.
Region Maintenance crews are the eyes and ears on the road, they see what needs to be fixed and get down to fixing it. Each maintenance station has a budget and they work to prioritize issues that need to be addressed. They are always looking to address problems in the best way possible. Work in the field changes from day to day and is reactionary to ensuring the roads are in good condition through all seasons. The skills that are learned by working on a maintenance crew comes down to learning how to calmly rationalize the situation and determine the solution.
