The Open Textbook Fellowship (OTF) was established by Academic Affairs and the CTL to address a number of critical issues involving college textbooks:
the rapidly increasing cost of textbooks (135% increase over the past two decades)
students not purchasing textbooks which negatively impacts their academics and mental health
To that end, the objectives of the OTF are:
To create a sustainable initiative to facilitate the adoption of open textbooks/courseware—often referred to as Open Educational Resources (OER).
To positively impact student learning and college affordability without sacrificing the quality and rigor of existing materials.
The 2026 fellowship will be held June 1 - June 5, 2026.
In since 2019, the OTF has:
trained 80 instructors
over 400 sections
including over 90 non-cohort courses where OTF faculty and their peers adopted OER for other courses
impacted over 14,000 students
conservatively saved students over $880,000 in textbook costs
The OTF is offered each summer, immediately after the conclusion of the spring term. The call for participants is issued in early April.
