Putra Agricultural Centre, formerly known as University Agricultural Park, was established on 1 December 2001 as a platform to support teaching and research in the field of agriculture, while also providing services to the campus community and the public. It covers a total area of approximately 570 hectares, which includes 407 hectares in the Serdang campus and 162 hectares at the Puchong Farm. Meanwhile, the University Agricultural Park at the Bintulu campus spans 714.135 hectares. The main activities at UPMKB involve teaching and research in crop science, livestock, aquaculture, and agricultural engineering.
The University Agricultural Park originated from the Farm Division of Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, which had been operating since 1971 to provide practical training for students and services to the campus such as transportation, sanitation, and more. In 1998, the Farm Division was restructured and renamed the University Research Park, Universiti Putra Malaysia, with the function of providing research and agricultural services. In line with the national and university aspirations to elevate the agricultural sector, the name was later changed to University Agricultural Park.
Early History of TPU Farms
UPM began as the School of Agriculture on 21 May 1931 in Serdang, Selangor, occupying an area of 22 acres. On 23 June 1947, it was upgraded to become the College of Agriculture Malaya, and subsequently became Universiti Pertanian Malaysia on 29 October 1971.
Since its early days, the farms at the University Agricultural Park (TPU) have served as training and research sites for students and lecturers in the fields of agriculture, forestry, and animal science.
