On 15 February 1982, another historic moment took place for Universiti Pertanian Malaysia (the former name of Universiti Putra Malaysia) with the symbolic founding of the Seventh Residential College (KK7), marked by the ceremonial placement of the college’s foundation pillar. The original purpose of establishing this college was to house members of the UPM Reserve Officers Training Unit (PALAPES). The administrative operations of the college officially began on 8 March 1982 at exactly 8:00 a.m. On 2 July 1983, the college received its first intake of 650 new students. The Seventh Residential College (KK7) was officially inaugurated on 4 October 1983 by Dato’ Mohd. Noor Bin Ismail, who was then the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs and Development at Universiti Pertanian Malaysia.
There are six buildings at the Seventh Residential College, comprising one administration building and five residential blocks. The residential blocks are named after animals found in the tropical rainforest, each symbolizing a unique quality:
Block Rusa (Deer) – symbolizing beauty
Block Kijang (Barking Deer) – symbolizing agility
Block Seladang (Gaur) – symbolizing strength
Block Napuh (Mouse Deer) – symbolizing gentleness
Block Pelanduk (Lesser Mouse Deer) – symbolizing intelligence
NAME CHANGE OF THE COLLEGE
On 25 April 1996 (7 Zulhijjah 1416 Hijrah), the Seventh Residential College (KK7) was officially renamed Kolej Sultan Alaeddin Suleiman Shah (KOSASS). The renaming ceremony was officiated by the grandson of the namesake, His Royal Highness Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah.
The name of the late Sultan Alaeddin Sulaiman Shah was chosen in recognition of his contributions to Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, especially in nurturing competent individuals to contribute to national development. Moreover, His Majesty was the one who officiated the School of Agriculture Malaya, the original institution that later became Universiti Pertanian Malaysia. This blend of historical significance and the excellence of the college community has made KOSASS one of the most distinguished residential colleges at Universiti Putra Malaysia.
COLLEGE MERGER
Universiti Putra Malaysia restructured its residential college organization and merged the Second College and Kolej Sultan Alaeddin Suleiman Shah into a single entity starting on 15 June 2019. This initiative was part of the Governance Transformation Plan for Residential Colleges, carried out by the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni).
