Early History (1921–1968)
Beginning with the establishment of the School of Agriculture, Malaya (1931), the library was just a small room.
Students had to borrow books and study in the dormitory.
1956: Tan Sri Senu Abdul Rahman urged improvements to the library.
1959: Allocation of RM2,500 for books and equipment.
The collection grew to 3,000 books (1964).
1965: Mr. Lin Meng Fou was appointed and introduced a book classification system.
Collection reached 7,000 books (1967).
1968: Construction of a new building and appointment of Mr. Syed Salim Agha (First Professional Librarian).
Era of Expansion (1968–1978)
1969: New building completed with a capacity of 30,000 books and 210 seats.
Still inadequate, another new building was constructed (1973) — capacity for 120,000 books and 750 seats.
1974: User education introduced (abstract & indexing courses).
1982: Second Block (Block A) completed.
PSAS involved in AGRIS project – agriculture reference center.
Modernisation & Technology Era (1979–1995)
1979: Joined MALMARC (shared cataloguing project).
1984: Use of magnetic tapes & microform catalogues.
Two catalogues: Card (until 1978), Microfiche (after 1979).
1982: Building extension – 500,000 books & 2,000 seats.
Started developing Malaysiana Collection.
1986: Use of Matrix Display Board (information display system).
1985: First microcomputer – access to external data (MAYPAC).
CD-ROM & CD-ROM network systems introduced.
1987–1988: Internal databases (AGRIMAL, MAKMAL, FAMILY).
1988: VTLS – online library management system.
1989: Computerised loan system (end of card catalogue).
Early 1990s: Online portal & CCoD (1992).
Current Facts
PSAS now has 2 main blocks (19,007 m²), with over 2,000 seats.
4 branches: Medicine, Veterinary, Engineering, Bintulu.
Postgraduate Lounge at Block B – exclusive for postgraduate students.
Provides print materials, media, and electronic information.
