The global evolution and importance of learning and research in the field of computing were strategically harnessed in the offering of academic programs at UPM during the 1980s. One of the effective strategies to achieve this goal was through the introduction of Diploma and Bachelor of Computer Science programs. The growing demand and rapid development of these courses required a more structured academic and administrative framework. Consequently, by 1992, in line with the rapid advancement of information technology, the Department of Computer Science was established.
Accordingly, the courses were designed and offered to meet the demands and needs of most students, guided by both local and international market expectations. This included postgraduate studies and supervision for students pursuing Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.
In 1995, UPM took another step forward in the field of computer education. Recognizing the essence of borderless education, the Diploma and Bachelor of Computer Science programs were offered in collaboration with private educational institutions. This was in line with the expanding landscape of computer education at UPM.
In October 1998, the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology was officially established to meet the growing demand for academic programs and to align with the rapid development of the field. The establishment of the faculty also aligned with the university’s aim of keeping pace with advancements in information technology.
Today, the faculty consists of four departments:
Department of Multimedia
Department of Computer Science
Department of Software Engineering and Information Systems
Department of Communication Technology and Network
