The history of the establishment of the Faculty of Science since 1972 reflects a remarkable transformation from a small division to becoming one of the largest faculties at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). The faculty is also etched into the university’s history as a contributor and starting point for the creation of several other faculties.
In 1972, the faculty was initially established as the Division of Basic Sciences, with the objective of offering foundational science courses to students from other faculties at UPM. Due to the rapid growth in demand and course offerings, a more structured academic and administrative system was needed. Thus, in line with its growing role and objectives, the Division of Basic Sciences was upgraded in 1975 to faculty status and renamed the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies.
Since then, the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies has undergone several phases of evolution, including the establishment of the Department of Environmental Sciences in 1975 and the Department of Computer Science in 1992. Both departments were later upgraded to become new faculties: the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology in 1998, and the Faculty of Environmental Studies in 2004. Also in 2004, the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology was transferred to merge with the Department of Biotechnology in the Faculty of Food Science, forming another new faculty — the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences.
Following this restructuring in 2004, the faculty was officially renamed the Faculty of Science, comprising four departments:
Department of Biology
Department of Physics
Department of Chemistry
Department of Mathematics
The Faculty of Science offers 14 undergraduate academic programs, 5 Master of Science (Coursework) programs, as well as Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs in various fields. Three undergraduate academic programs have received international accreditation from the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) based in the United Kingdom.
