The Tingguian (otherwise known as Itneg or Itineg which means people living near the Tineg River) are found in the province of Abra and most concentrated in the towns of Tubo, Manabo, and Sallapadan among others. Several subgroups are distinguished namely: Adassen, Binongan, Inlaod, Masadiit, Aplai, Banao, Gubang, Maeng, Luba, and Balatok.
Binakul is a special weaving technique wherein negative and positive colored threads in the form of graduated rectangles emanate from a central rectangle to which results in a kusikus or whirlwind design. This is meant to confuse spirits from causing misfortune to the deceased and their families.
In creating an illusion of swirling circles, the plane has repeating vertical and horizontal lines placed in equal distance from each other. This pattern has 180 rotational symmetries about the center of each central rectangle. It has a symmetry group type p2mm. A reflectional symmetry is shown perpendicular to each other which intersects at a center of 180° rotation.
Dinapat is a design which literally means “full or total” denoting its appearance that fills up the whole blanket. It has motifs such as human figures, horses, carabao calves, and large deer which means that these are taken by the deceased in their afterlife. This kind of blanket is intended usually for the use of the upper class in ceremonies offered to the dead.
Both the top and lower part of the blanket mirrors each other’s designs through a horizontal axis at its center. The same goes with the left and right halves of the pattern which also has a reflectional symmetry with a vertical axis placed at the center.
Pinilian is a weaving technique characterized by using different methods of inserting the horizontal and vertical threads across each other. Its product is an Itneg blanket which shows human forms, horses and warp-frame designs that were used in ancient times to announce the death of a person. As it was illustrated in the blanket, the human figure is lying down while the horse is upright. This connotes that when the person dies, the horse gallops around town to spread the news of its owner’s death.
The pattern contains translational symmetries coming from two directions. The symmetry group is type p1.
