The Yakans are the indigenous people of Basilan Island, located off the coast of Mindanao to the west of Zamboanga. They are also known as a moro tribe for their colorful and handwoven clothing that was well crafted.
The most intricate design worn by the women around their waists or as a head cloth is known as 'Saputanggan/Sepatanggan.'
Look at the design of this Saputanggan cloth, it has a central square, four squares in the corners with identical motifs, and strip patterns on the sides.
Every finite symmetrical pattern at the center and corner squares adopts the inherent symmetries of a square that belong to the symmetry group 'D4'; it was rotated 90 degrees, 180 degrees, and 270 degrees around the design's center and shows reflections with axes passing through it.
The strip patterns, on the other hand, have the symmetry of the 'mm' group. It has vertical and horizontal reflections, as well as 180o rotations around the reflection axes' points of intersection.
