The Ibaloy are found in Benguet province, concentrated in the municipalities of Itogon, Tuba, La Trinidad, Bokod, Baguio and Atok. The ethnic group has broad dialectical differences, however not given a prominent study as of today. So far, only Ibaloy Proper and Karao are the subgroups clearly indicated.
frieze patterns on a kuabaw
Kuabaw is a type of blanket used mainly by the upper class or also referred to as baknang in the Ibaloy ethnic group. This is usually designed with men, snakes, mortars and shields in which each corresponds to a representation.
The blanket is decorated with frieze patterns shown with how the mortars (X) are placed in the material. A reflectional symmetry is formed from its vertical and horizontal axes. It has a symmetry group mm. In this example, a “symmetry breaking” of the translational symmetry or the point where the symmetry ends is with a snake following a human figure.
Dil-e blanket
Dil-e is a blanket with similar features as in pinagpagan of the Bontoc. However, it is missing a pud-ok of different colors or the eyes found in pinagpagan. Its upper and lower panel is filled with frieze patterns, while the central panel with a planar pattern in which three pairs of black bands are sewn across the white background, has a pattern resembling a matmata. Together with its human motifs, the frieze pattern has symmetry group mm. For the planar pattern, the symmetry group is type pm.
It also consists of reflection axes exhibited in this pattern. Meanwhile, the planar pattern does not lack any kind of symmetry – rotational nor glide.
