Last August 1-2, 2024, the UP Personality and Individual Differences Research Laboratory took center stage at the “Linangan 2024: Pagsasakatubo ng Panukat at Pagtatasa” as esteemed resource speakers. Held in Room 304, Lagmay Hall, the workshop featured insightful presentations by Dr. Adrianne John Galang, Prof. Kathlyn Caragay, Dr. Christie Sio, and Prof. Marie Rose Morales, who also facilitated the event, as well as Prof. Jay Yacat. It began with the opening remarks by Dr. Francis Simonh Bries, setting the tone of the event through his inspiring message. The event was hosted by the Pambansang Samahan ng Sikolohiyang Pilipino (PSSP).
With the aim of contributing to the indigenization of psychological measurement and assessment, the workshop centered on key topics, such as Prof. Yacat’s introduction to Sikolohiyang Pilipino and the purpose of indigenization and Dr. Galang’s discussion on the cross-indigenous framework. Delving into the indigenization practices, Prof. Yacat deepened the foundation of understanding indigenization. Along with this, the workshop was further enriched by the presentation of Prof. Caragay on test development processes, particularly item analysis, item development, scale construction, and assessment of psychometric properties. It also emphasized the issues and challenges in translating and indigenizing foreign concepts and tests, where Dr. Sio focused on the cases of the Social Dominance Orientation Scale and the “Failure to Launch” Scale. Ultimately, it was completed with the major insights from the current practices, issues, and recommendations related to indigenization in psychological assessment presented by Prof. Morales.
The event involved professors and students of psychology, psychometricians, psychologists, and individuals preparing for the Board Licensure Examination for Psychologists and Psychometricians (BLEPP). Participants were able to raise questions and clarifications during the open forum segment conducted after the presentations.
