The UP Personality and Individual Differences Research Laboratory (UP PIRLab) is one of the research laboratories under the Department of Psychology, University of the Philippines Diliman.
Congratulations to our lab members, Dr. Morales and Dr. Sio, on receiving their research grants. We are very proud of your achievements! Take a look at their projects below:
Talino at Diskarte: Towards a framework for the measurement of intelligence and problem-solving in the Filipino population.
The project extends Dr. Morales’ dissertation on diskarte, defined as creative social problem-solving. It has two components: first, a reanalysis of the original dataset using trained raters to strengthen the dissertation’s findings; second, an investigation of the relationship between diskarte and intelligence, a connection suggested in the earlier work. This second component also aims to inform the development of a framework for measuring intelligence among Filipinos.
Testing and Calibrating a Filipino Personality Trait Inventory to Account for Socioeconomic Differences
This project by Dr. Sio examines the performance of the Masaklaw na Panukat ng Loob (Mapa), a Filipino five-factor personality inventory, across diverse socioeconomic and cultural contexts. It has three main components: first, assessing how the instrument performs in populations where its psychometric properties may be weaker, particularly among individuals with varying educational and socioeconomic backgrounds; second, evaluating new items, translations, and features aimed at improving the tool’s reliability and validity; and third, investigating the stability of personality scores over time through follow-up assessments. Ultimately, the study seeks to refine the Mapa to ensure that it provides fairer and more accurate personality assessments for Filipinos from diverse communities.
