Master's degree in Architecture (Conservation) is a 2-year program, taught in English at Sapienza University of Rome, as second step of 3+2 years academic path (Italian Bachelor's + Master's degrees).
It is also possible to study in Italian, applying for "Architettura (Restauro)" curriculum. These courses have the same classes and same organization, the only difference is the teaching language.
Our master's degree is managed by the Faculty of Architecture, and in particular by the Department of History, Representation and Restoration of Architecture. Programme coordinator is Professor Alfonso Ippolito.
Architecture (Conservation) focuses primarily on architectural heritage: the course aims at achieving specific skills in planning reinforcement, safeguard and conservation of architectural and urban heritage, developing high-quality design process, considering correspondences between a new project and its environment, including historical values consideration.
The course offers a multidisciplinary program, including different disciplines, from humanities to technical-scientific matters, preparing students to gain specific skills in building processes and conservation of existing structures.
The two-year program addresses:
historical-critical and historical-technical analysis of architecture, ranging from individual projects to landscape and environment as a whole;
architectural project design, construction process, and conservation of existing architectural structures;
specific scientific knowledge and critical know-how.
Final certificate "Master's Degree in Architecture (Conservation)" is a state-recognized qualification, and it corresponds to the same level of all other Italian, UE and world university master's degrees (Level 7 - ISCED 2011).
According to the Italian legislation, obtaining a master's degree in the architecture field, such as "Architecture (Conservation)", is a mandatory requirement to become a professional Architect, Territorial Planner (Pianificatore territoriale), Civil and Environmental Engineer (Ingegnere civile e ambientale), Landscape Architect (Paesaggista) or a Conservator-Restorer of the Architectural and Environmental Heritage (Conservatore dei beni architettonici e ambientali). After graduating, students have to pass the State professional exam to join the Order of Architects (Section A) if they want to work as private architect in Italy.
Master’s Degree Architecture (Conservation) obtained the EU recognition in 2004, so that students who attended and passed the Italian national entrance test at bachelor level, the related State professional exam (Section A), and obtained the master's degree are able to work all over the European Union member countries, and officially are recognized as architect in EU (Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council issued by 07/09/2005).
A Master’s Degree such as "Architecture (Conservation)" is also a prerequisite for admission to:
PhD programs (three years);
second-level Italian professional "Master" (postgraduate course that aims to enrich and deepen the knowledge acquired through graduation with specific, operationally expendable skills) of one or two years;
Specialization School in architectural and landscape heritage (postgraduate course of two years specifically focused on conservation and restoration)
