The Wayland H. Cato Jr. First-Year Doctoral Fellowship was established in 2004 by the Wayland H. Cato Jr. Foundation to recruit newly admitted graduate students of exceptional talent into doctoral programs at UNC Charlotte.
Award: First Year: $25,000 Admitted for summer or fall service‐free stipend divided equally between semesters. In‐state tuition, non‐resident tuition (if required), and health insurance offered through the Graduate Assistant Support Plan (GASP). Second‐Fifth Year: In‐state tuition, nonresident tuition (if required), health insurance offered through the Graduate Assistant Support Plan (GASP). The department is expected to offer a qualifying graduate assistantship in the academic program. Note: Must be enrolled full-time (9 credits) .

Newly admitted to a doctoral program for summer or fall 2025
Preference will be given to students who show evidence of the potential to make a significant contribution to society by completing their terminal degree in their chosen discipline.
Preference given to first-generation graduate students.
U.S. Citizens, permanent residents of the United States, and international students eligible.
Minimum GPA of 3.0-4.0.
Must enroll full-time (9 or more graduate credit hours) fall and spring semesters.
Open to both domestic and international students
