For trainees interested in pursuing fellowships in both Critical Care Medicine (CCM) and Interventional Cardiology (IVC), each a one-year ACGME-accredited program, the challenges of securing positions in both specialties at the same institution can be a source of uncertainty. Additionally, relocating for a single year of training can be logistically and personally challenging.
To address this, the University of Minnesota Division of Cardiovascular Disease is pleased to offer a dual-track fellowship pathway, providing guaranteed admission to both programs at the time of acceptance. Fellows accepted to this pathway will enter as a CCM fellow, and move directly into an IVC fellowship the following year. This pathway ensures a seamless transition from one fellowship to the next, allowing for continuity in training and an optimized educational experience.
Fellows accepted to this pathway will:
begin training in Critical Care Medicine before advancing directly into the Interventional Cardiology fellowship the following year, contingent on maintaining good standing in the program;
benefit from a consistent training environment fostering professional development and mentorship in both subspecialties; and
have flexibility in structuring the sequence of their fellowship, though we strongly recommend completing the procedural intensive fellowship (IC) second to ensure the smoothest transition to clinical practice.
Upon successful completion of both programs, fellows will be board eligible in both Critical Care Medicine and Interventional Cardiology.
Applicants interested in this dual-track should apply to the University of Minnesota Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program (ACGME ID 1422614001) through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), and indicate interest by sending an email to Program Administrators Sam Strennen (ccmfellow@umn.edu) and David Goldfeld (advancedcvd@umn.edu) with Program Directors Dr. Andrea Elliott (elliotta@umn.edu) and Dr. Sergey Gurevich (gure0011@umn.edu) CC'ed.
The CCM Program Administrator will coordinate with applicants and the IC Program Administrator to arrange a joint interview day. Candidates accepted to the CCM fellowship through this track will automatically secure a position in the IVC fellowship for the academic year following their CCM fellowship provided they remain in good standing in the program.
If a fellow wishes to complete the IVC fellowship first, they should apply to the UMN IVC fellowship through ERAS and indicate interest by sending a message to the CCM and IVC Program Administrators.
