Adding MS Degree for PhD Students

Students enrolled in the PhD can add the MSECE degree to their program, which is completed on the way to competing the PhD. Below are the steps to add the MSECE degree to your student account, and how to complete the MSECE so it appears on your transcript.

Please keep in mind that if you wish to complete a Master's degree in a different department as well, you can only share 8 credits between Master's degrees. You'll want to determine if it makes sense to add the MSECE in that scenario.

Note: the MSECE degree can be cleared before the PhD, if desired.

To add the MS, please complete the Change of Status form. For the question that asks, "State below your goals and objectives in relation to the proposed change:" you can write: "I am adding the MSECE to my PhD program."  After you fill out the form, please sign and send to Ann Rausch (arausch@umn.edu) to sign for the DGS. Ann will sign the form and submit to gsquest@umn.edu.

Once the MSECE has been added to your account and your GPAS has been processed, you can apply to have your degree cleared. Here are the steps to clear MS degrees.
