Using gpas or gdp

Do I use GPAS or the GDP?
Students with degrees starting Fall 2020 and after will use GPAS.

Students who began degrees prior to Fall 2020 will continue to use the GDP form.

What is GPAS?
GPAS is an online tool that automatically sorts coursework into the correct degree requirement sections for our programs. GPAS is replacing the GDP form.

Instead of submitting your coursework on the GDP, I'll manage your coursework requirements in GPAS and ensure that your degree requirements are satisfied for degree clearance.

What do I need to do in GPAS?

All students using GPAS need to submit their GPAS Planner. This step is a formality needed so you can move on to the next steps in your degree, whether that's applying to graduate for MSECE students or assigning the Prelim Oral Exam committee for PhD students.

How do I get to GPAS to submit the planner?

  1. Log into MyU and select the Academics tab, and then click the Degree Progress sub-tab.

  2. Click on the “GPAS” link at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Submit.

  4. A pop-up box will tell you that the Planner has been submitted. This comes to the Grad Advisor (Sarah Dohm) and Sarah will approve it for you. Faculty will not need to go into GPAS to review this--Sarah will manage this process.

When should I submit my GPAS Planner?

MSECE Plan C students need to submit their GPAS planner before they can "apply to graduate" and have their degree cleared.

MSECE Plan A students need to submit their GPAS planner before they are able to assign their Final Oral Exam committee.

PhD students need to submit their GPAS planner before the are able to assign their Prelim Oral Exam committee.

Aside from those deadlines, students can submit their planner anytime they like. Students do not need to enter their planned courses--going into GPAS and hitting the "Submit" button is the only requirement.

How do I confirm that my coursework will satisfy the degree requirements?

Students can review their GPAS at anytime on their own. However, GPAS can be confusing to interpret so the best practice is to review your GPAS with the Graduate Advisor. Please contact Sarah Dohm (sdohm@umn.edu) to confirm your coursework plan. Here you can schedule an appointment with Sarah to review your GPAS together (virtually or in-person).
