ESST can be used for a variety of reasons, including when an employee is sick, to care for a sick family member, to seek assistance if an employee or their family member has experienced domestic abuse, or closure of the employee's workplace due to a weather or public emergency or closure of a family member's school or care facility due to a weather or public emergency that prevents an employee from being able to work.
Employees can earn up to 48 hours annually.
Current sick time programs will not be impacted by the addition of ESST. This program is offered in addition to the University’s traditional sick time program.
Employees working in Minnesota qualify to access ESST once they have worked at least 80 hours in a year. This includes full-time, part-time, and temporary employees, as well as student workers.
Employees do not need to exhaust other sick time options before accessing ESST. It can be used as soon as it is earned.

The Dean's Office policy is that we don't pay out vacation balances except in extreme circumstances. Per the civil services rules an employee may request a cash out but at the unit's discretion.
Taking time away from work is essential to maintain employee wellbeing and work/life balance. We recommend that you work with your supervisor to find an immediate plan to take some time off so you avoid missing any further accruals. As your supervisor, they should be in full support of you taking the time off you need to avoid losing vacation accrual. Since you are so close to the max, we would recommend you take off more than the minimum and give yourself a much deserved break.

Workplace Flexibility - Medical School Policy
The University of Minnesota supports and encourages a healthy work life balance for employees. Research shows that the benefits of offering flexible work arrangements not only contribute to an increase in employee loyalty and morale, it also reduces tardiness and absenteeism, and enhances organizational image as a family-friendly place to work.
The Dean's Office strives for excellence in the employee experience. A flexible work environment can contribute to this goal by providing the potential for employees to perform consistently at the highest levels, work together efficiently and effectively to meet the college’s objectives, rise together to the challenges facing the contemporary workforce, and remain agile during periods of disruption. By integrating a flexible work environment with a performance-focused culture, we are able to support our employees’ wellbeing while achieving college goals and objectives.
In the Dean's Office, flexwork refers to flexible work arrangements that vary from the standard 9-to-5, in the office approach.
