Complete I-9 Employment Authorization
The I-9 must be completed with HR before the first day of employment. The employee will be sent home and their appointment terminated until verification is complete. New employees cannot start working or get paid until the I-9 verification and background check are complete. New employee start dates will be adjusted accordingly.
Initiate background check
Background checks are required for all hires, internal transfers and re-assignments (including temporary/casual employees) if one has not been completed by the University of Minnesota within the past 12 months. The policy also requires background checks for all volunteers who interact with or oversee minors in program activities or recreational or residential facilities. New employees cannot start working or get paid until the I-9 verification and background check are complete. New employee start dates will be adjusted accordingly.
Background checks are not required for undergraduate or graduate students, unless they are participating in a program with minor children or having access to private data or confidential information.
