Pre-Publication Support Service (PREPSS) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that works to address disparities in global health research.
PREPSS was founded in 2017 by Dr. Ella August, our Editor-in-Chief.
Since its origination, PREPSS has partnered with organizations from over 10 countries currently has a team of over 150 volunteer peer reviewers.
WHAT WE DO
Pre-Publication Support Service (PREPSS) provides scientific communication training to health researchers and instructors around the globe. PREPSS has three key programs: our author training program, peer review training program, and train-the-trainers program.
We offer author training on topics such as writing a publishable journal article, choosing a target journal, designing effective tables and figures, writing a conference abstract, preparing an effective scientific poster, improving writing productivity, and other topics. Through our network of over 150 peer reviewers, we also provide authors with pre-publication peer review to improve their publication success rate at peer-reviewed journals. Our peer reviewers undergo a rigorous training program to build their capacity to deliver high-quality peer reviews. Lastly, we provide writing and publishing training for mentors, trainers, and instructors to improve the sustainability of our work. PREPSS works in a range of formats, including virtual webinars and on-site workshops.
To strengthen capacity for health research and improve equity in academic publishing
PREPSS does not receive funding from the University of Michigan and is 100% supported financially by our clients. There is no cost to individual authors from partner institutions to receive PREPSS services. Organizations interested in partnering with us may request language for grant applications to seek external funding for PREPSS services.
As part of PREPSS commitment to research and publication ethics, volunteer peer reviewers are not permitted to join authors team on manuscripts they review.
PREPSS offers free resources on our website, available to all interested researchers, regardless of whether they are from participating institutions. These resources support authors in scientific writing and navigating the journal submission process. Our suite of free authorship resources can be used in manuscript development. These resources include annotated cover letter examples to journals, example responses to reviewers, writing checklists, poster templates, journal submission tutorials, and guides to other topics in scholarly publishing. This portion of our website is updated frequently, as we develop new tutorials and resources.
