Visiting faculty appointments may be requested for individuals whose ongoing employment responsibilities lie outside the University at another institution of higher education. Appointments as visiting instructional faculty are for one year or less, and may be extended for a second year only under unusual circumstances. These appointments are without tenure.
The School of Kinesiology will follow the related definitions and appointment processes as outlined in the Regent’s Bylaws Sections 5.22 “Adjunct Professorships” and 5.23 “Clinical Instructional Staff”, as well as in The University of Michigan Faculty Handbook section 5.C “Instructional Faculty: Classifications” and 5.D “Research Faculty”.
Criteria for appointment to visiting faculty ranks should be consistent with those for regular faculty to the extent applicable as determined by the SoK. The specific conditions of these appointments, including the degree of participation in departmental affairs, are unit-specific. See SPG 201.34-1.
Visiting faculty appointments and/or reappointments require approval by the Dean, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs (ADFA), the Associate Dean for Research (ADR) - for research track requests only, and the SoK Executive Committee, following the submission of the requested materials. If necessary, the Dean will call a meeting with the ADFA, ADR, Program Chair, and/or relevant faculty to discuss the appointment or reappointment.
