November 2, 1-2 pm. How to Get Help Online from the University of Maryland and the Extension Services. Lisa Kuder, Native Plants & Landscapes Specialist from the University of Maryland, will cover how to get answers to questions you may have about your plants. November 7, 2-3 pm. Killing your weeds with weeds. Can we use plants to defeat unwanted plants? This talk examines approaches such as smothering weeds with dead plant material, strategic cutting, competitive exclusion, allelopathy, and more. Discussion will include how plants compete for space and ways to exploit those strategies, the roles of planning and timing. Online. $20 (American Horticultural Society Members $15). Register
November 10, 10:30 am-noon. Native Seed Sowing. Learn about selecting native plant species for the growing environment, how native seeds have adapted to different growing conditions, and engage in sowing seeds for the winter. Each participant will bring home 2-3 four-inch pots with native seeds. This class will involve a short walk to the Kent Island Community Garden, where participants can collect native seeds as well. November 13, 7-8 pm. Soil Health with Bacteria. There was a time when no one knew about the partnership between mycorrhizal fungi and plants. Now it is time to learn about the analog relationship between bacteria and plants known as rhizophagy. This talk will clarify the amazing process and show you how to harness it to increase plant productivity, health, and tolerance to stresses such as pathogens, climate change, and soil loss. November 15, 10:30 am-12:30 pm. What Is and Isn't Organic Gardening. Come take a look at the complex world of organic gardening. You will learn how to use organic gardening principles to control pests and diseases effectively, and why some pesticides are considered organic and others are not. Just because some pesticides are allowed in organic gardening does not mean that precautions are not warranted. Sometimes the best way to handle pests and diseases is by implementing good practices. Join Bradley Simpson, Nature Forward's Habitat Manager, for a tour of the ongoing restoration at Woodend Nature Sanctuary followed by a talk by Madeline Bright, Earth Sangha's Executive Director, about plant communities and native plant selection for restoration and replanting.
