February 1, 1-2 pm. Wild Ones Winter Speaker Series: Native Ferns. Kit Sheffield will be presenting on "Native Ferns.” He is a Virginia Master Naturalist who leads fern related hikes and has been featured on many gardening podcasts. Please let us know if you will be coming so that we can put out enough chairs. You are welcome to come as early as noon to chat with other Wild Ones members and help put out chairs. February 4, noon-1 pm. Rethinking Lawns: Turning Green Carpets into Diverse Ecosystems. Part of UME’s Natives at Noon series, this session will feature Dr. Liz Anna Kozik, a Research Scientist at the Chicago Botanic Garden. She started studying native prairie restoration and ended up using those skills and knowledge to figure out how we can incorporate native plants into our lawn landscapes. With the Rethinking Lawns (rethinkinglawns.com) team, she studies and tests the methods and benefits of changing our existing lawns into more diverse spaces that can benefit both people and the living world.
