Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial agents, making infections harder to treat. This leads to increased disease spread, severe illness, and death.
World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW), held annually from November 18-24, is a global initiative to raise awareness of AMR and promote actions to fight drug-resistant pathogens. The 2025 theme, "Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future," highlights the urgent need for united action to address AMR, which is already impacting health, food systems, the environment, and economies.
Following the 2024 UN General Assembly's High-Level Meeting on AMR, this campaign calls on governments, healthcare providers, farmers, and the public to translate commitments into real solutions. Tackling AMR requires long-term investment in human, animal, and environmental health, with a focus on strengthening surveillance, ensuring access to quality medicines, and fostering innovation.
Whether you're in healthcare, agriculture, or policymaking, every action counts in the fight against AMR. Together, we can ensure antimicrobials remain effective for future generations.
The Breakfast@UMHealth web seminar was organised on 19 Nov 2025.
On 5 November 2025, the AAW Committee at UMMC held an AMR Quiz for Healthcare Workers. The quiz highlighted the importance of hand hygiene and AMR in protecting patient safety and public health. Around 200 participants from clinical and non-clinical categories took part.
On 12 November 2025, the Antimicrobial Awareness Week Committee at UMMC held the BUG-OFF Explorace in conjunction with World AMR Awareness Week, themed “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future.” Open to UMMC staff, the event offered a fun, interactive way to learn about AMR.
The WAAW 2025 Opening Ceremony was held on 24 November 2025 at the UMMC Clinical Auditorium.
The ceremony featured addresses, programme highlights, and the announcement of competition winners. A dedicated AMR stewardship workshop was also conducted, providing practical strategies for clinical settings.
With about 150 attendees, the event reinforced the collective responsibility to combat AMR and promote the responsible use of antibiotics.
