APSIC 2026 is coming to Malaysia!
Over two productive days (21–22 June), the Studying Hygiene Interventions to Reduce Nosocomial Infections in Southeast Asian Intensive Care Units (SHINIA-ICU) Focus Group Discussions brought together clinicians, nurses, environmental services representatives, and researchers from Nepal, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, and Australia to co-develop a practical ICU environmental cleaning bundle for low- and middle-income countries.
Through engaging discussions and consensus-building, participants identified key recommendations on environmental cleaning practices, audit and feedback mechanisms, and education and training strategies to support successful implementation. These outputs will form the foundation of the SHINIA-ICU intervention, aimed at strengthening environmental hygiene and reducing healthcare-associated infections across participating hospitals.
A special thank you to Prof. Brett Mitchell for expertly facilitating the discussions and guiding the group towards meaningful consensus. We are also grateful to Dr. Kalisvar Marimuthu for his insightful presentation on the transmission of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs), which provided valuable context and stimulated rich discussions. Although the bundle is being developed primarily for implementation in LMIC settings, their expertise was invaluable in shaping a practical, evidence-informed, and contextually relevant intervention.
This workshop marks an important milestone in the SHINIA-ICU project. We look forward to translating these collective insights into practical improvements that will enhance patient safety, environmental hygiene, and infection prevention across the region.

On 12 November 2025, the Antimicrobial Awareness Week (AAW) Committee at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) organised the BUG-OFF Explorace in conjunction with World Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week, themed “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future.” The event was open exclusively to UMMC staff, inviting both clinical and non-clinical personnel to participate in a fun, interactive learning experience.
A total of 50 participants, forming 10 groups of five, competed in a series of five station games designed to reinforce essential AMR and infection-prevention knowledge. The stations covered hand hygiene (hand washing, hand rub, and quiz tasks), PPE, transmission, pharmacy antibiotic games, and an AMR-themed crossword puzzle. The explorace began at 9:00 AM and concluded at 10:30 AM, creating an energetic and engaging atmosphere throughout.
Prizes—including a RM500 first prize—will be announced during the WAAW 2025 Opening Ceremony on 24 November.
By blending education, teamwork, and friendly competition, the event empowered UMMC staff while strengthening awareness of antimicrobial resistance.
Congratulations to Ms. Lee Yee Qing, Ms. Lau Min Yi, and Ms. Vedika Bhatt for their impactful projects to combat AMR! Their Candidature & Thesis Defense on 5 Jan 2025 marks a milestone in advancing research. 👩🔬🔬
