Gender vs Sex 101
To begin with, the importance of defining the difference between sex and gender. Sex reflects the societal assignment of biological traits fitting people into the two categories of female and male. Gender is through cultural and social meaning behind the identity of the individual. Understanding the difference between the two is critical to establish the inequality of the Greater Dayton community.
Two subgroups of gender are transgender and cisgender. Transgender is described as a gender identity different than the sex assigned at birth, while cisgender conforms with the sex assigned at birth.
Learning & Creating Gender
Gender Socialization is the process by which society teaches cultural expectations and norms about how to be a man/ woman
Starts at birth and continues through infancy (clothing, toys, assigning personality traits)
Escalates to gender segregation in the workforce- stereotypes of what jobs men vs. women "should" do (stereotypes)
Wage Gap
The wage gap is the difference in income between men and women of the same job. Women are generally paid less than men for the same work, despite other differences.

" Roughly 20 minutes long, this video contains Hillary Clinton and Anne-Marie Slaughter discuss the cultural norms at the center of the worldwide gender pay gap, including the motherhood penalty."

Gender Diversity Support group at Dayton Children’s Hospital

Poverty and Age within Gender in Dayton
In Montgomery County in 2019, at the age when women are becoming independent from their household and learning the ins and outs of adulthood (age 25-34), they are the most impoverished compared to men. In almost all adult demographics, women are living in a higher poverty rate then men.
