What is food insecurity?

Food insecurity: "A lack of consistent access to enough food for every person in a household to live an active, healthy life" (Feeding America 2022). This can be short or long term and affects both children and adults. It can often be reliant on household economic income level, social condition, and geographic location.

Food desert:  “Food deserts are geographic areas where residents have few to no convenient options for securing affordable and healthy foods — especially fresh fruits and vegetables. Disproportionately found in high-poverty areas, food deserts create extra, everyday hurdles that can make it harder for kids, families and communities to grow healthy and strong” (The Annie E. Casey Foundation 2021)

Nutrition: "The process of providing or obtaining the food necessary for health and growth." (Oxford Dictionary 2022)

Sociological Theories

Structural-Functional

A structural-functionalist would be focused on the food and agriculture industry, as well as the economic aspect of the institution that is food and nutrition. Structural-functionalists would look into food as cog in the machine that is the social and governmental system.

Conflict Theory

A conflict theory approach would be focused on how power and hierarchy influence food access and consumption. This includes who controls what, and how and why they do that.

Symbolic-Interactionist

A symbolic interactionist view would have sociologists interested in the cultural, social and symbolic use of food. Some examples could be examining the impact of going out to eat with friends or the specific use of food in a religious practice.
