A teaching assistant position is a form of employment and any absence is covered by statewide University of California policy on leaves.
On a 50% appointment you are eligible for two days of paid short-term leave per quarter. You may use this for:
Personal illness and/or disability
Birth, adoption, or care of a child or family member
Family emergencies
Immigration appointments for you, your domestic partner, or your family members
In addition, you are eligible for paid leaves for:
Military service
Bereavement (five calendar days per occurrence) for the death of a family member
Jury duty
For ASEs with appointments other than 50% FTE, the leave will be prorated.
ASEs on paid leave are compensated at the same rate as their appointment.
You are eligible for up to eight weeks of paid long-term leave per academic year. You may use this for:
Your serious health condition or to care for a family member who has a serious health condition.
To care for and bond with a newborn child or a child placed with you for adoption or foster care.
Pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions prior to, during, and after childbirth.
You should inform the instructor of record as soon as the need for the leave becomes known. Typically, unless the leave is for an unanticipated reason like illness or bereavement, you are expected to request leave no less than one working day in advance for short term leaves and 30 days in advance for long term leaves.
For all kinds of leaves, you are expected to assist as reasonably possible in finding a replacement, but it is ultimately the department’s responsibility to make arrangements for coverage.
